Mike
You might search the old Board archives for this frequent question. Here's a headstart:

Interstate battery thread.

Optima Orange thread.

I've been very pleased w/the Interstate MTP-91 which was a perfect fit and has a vent.

Interstate Battery website.

I think most any Type 48 size battery will fit, however, as has been said here many times - make sure the replacement is properly vented w/the vent tube unless it's a sealed unit like the Optima.

Talking

Type 48 from your local auto parts store is an exact replacement.

I don't know about "recommended" - but I just replaced my C4S's battery with an Exide Orbital.

This is an AGM (Absorbed Glass Matt) battery like the Optima (apparently licensed under some incestuous corporate relationship) without the fitment problems.

The posts are outboard enough to avoid having to futz with the 993's "bent" positive connector.

Dropped right in, includes a lip at the bottom of the battery for the hold down clamp. $140 at a local autoparts place.

Note that AGM batteries WILL vent if over charged. Usually they don't, however. They also have some unusual re-charge characteristics to be aware of, but for the most part they are plug-n-play with no acid or venting issues.

Thumbs up

Mike,

You might want to consider Dennis' Exide rec. The Optima worked, but it has been a bit of a PITA with respect to the positive terminal connection.

thanks for the help. I ended up following Dan's suggestion and got an interstate. The fit was good, but the vent line is on the side away from the vent line. I'll need to get a longer line to make it work. Thanks all - Mike W

Dennis, I did the Optima orange top conversion and had the same problems as Anir did. One other issue was that the battery was a bit taller than the stock one and the carpet didn't sit down very well. Does the Exide Orbital allow the carpet to sit down properly?

Thanks..

Jeff

Jeff,

I came across the following Griot Battery Drain Protector, which has a lower profile than our current battery disconnect switch solution and may solve the carpet interference problem.

At $69, it's an expensive solution, but I've already got the Orange top and would like to keep it. If I had to do it again, I'd first find a better solution for a positive terminal adapter, or go with the Exide Orbital if the clearance is better.
