993 Cup Car???
I am curious to find out if anyone can give me information on a 98 993 Cup car... What were they (stripped true race cars or a lightened club car) and how many were made? Did they have A/C, carpet, roll cages?? Street legal? Engine type?
Thanks in advance....

A CUP car by definition is a factory Porsche race car. The 1998 993 CUP 3.8Liter car you inquired about is a RS Clubsport based street car chassis with integrated rollcage welded in, no creature comforts whatsoever except cigarette light and windows to keep out rain--- no power steering, race seat & 6 point harness, race suspension with uniballs, solid lifter engine and 6spd close ratio transmission. Exhaust system uses stock 1995 993 headers without ductwork and stock 993 street catalytic converter blowinto straight pipes. Car is not street legal.......the closest thing to this car is an RS Clubsport which was a street car in which you could have had all your creature comforts provided you checked off the proper option boxes!

Thanks for the advice. Seems as though i only have two more questions.... Is a CUP car solely a track car, or can it be made to occasionally run on the street? Did US (or ROW) models have airbags or not....

993 cup cars are solely track cars (in europe some people managed tto get 964 cup cars street legal but that's another sttiry, no 993 cup car has been made street legal to the best of my knowledge)
There were no US moodels, only race cars and hence no US / ROW difference.
No airbags and don't even think about trying to get one in the country and ddrive it on the street. I had to sign a paper for mine that said that if I drove it on the street I would have to pay a fine of upo to $25,000!!!!

there are a bunch of 993 SUPERCUP 3.8L cars for sale all over the USA. Once again completely stripped out racecars.
Autoweek must have 4-6 993 SUPERCUP cars. I have a friend that owns a bodyshop and has dealer plates in the Poconos Mountains.......he slaps a dealer tag on his Cup car climbs over the doorbars......and drives it on the street atleast once a month for the hell of it. He doesnt care. Graphics all over it, numbers, rediculously/impossibly low to the ground, noisy loud........I laughed my *** off following for 25 miles through woods, ponds, and seeing peoples faces!!! The sad part about it is I have a 1995 993 that has no catalytic converters (been off for over 4 years) and it has the same suspension and seats and I drive it regularly on all the street.......because its a "racecar" without MSO you cant register the CUP car......but can make a street based 911/991 Turbo much more radical than a 993 Supercup car.......and drive those on the street. Its a catch 22.....many firebreathing 993TT w/o cats, 930s without emissions equipment, 993s without emissions......running around the East Coast where emissions laws are null & void depending on your area.

I'd like to locate one that has not been heavily campaigned (crashed) as a collectable and DE fun car. Problem is that most of all the cars in Autoweek are "rode hard, and put away wet." Looking for an original drivetrain that has not been modified....
Any leads?

I see others (Stuart) have gotten the Supercup bug. After seeing Scott Lyman run his this weekend at Road America (2:25s I recall) I'm itching to get one too.
There is a technical spec on the car at the www.grand-am.com website.
The big question is "What are the real operating costs to run one of these cars in Club Racing and DE?" I'm not talking just Hoosiers and Pagids, but engine rebuilds, the major stuff.
Any Supercup owners care to comment?

Be careful your not thinking about the GT3-RS. If you are reading on the Grand Am site, make sure you are looking at the Rolex cup cars and not the GT3 cars - completely different.
There are 4 or 5 993 cup cars in the latest Autoweek, and one is a local car in northern Va. I would love to have an excuse to look at the car and take some pics for you so let me know. Where are you located?
