Post Varioram upgrade for older 993's

I received a message telling me that lots of people have problems upgrading older 993 engines to Varioram. I spoke to my mechanic about this. He told me the important thing is to have a knowledgeable person reprogram the DME. They told me that initially after first installing the Porsche 3.8L kit (includes RS camshafts...) and the Varioram on my engine, the torque curve was extremely bumpy and the car was difficult to drive (suddenly too much or too little power...). This was solved by reprogramming the DME to flatten out those bumps. My torque curve is now pretty smooth and close to horizontal from 2500 up to 7000 revs.

I added a Varioram system to my 1995 993 last year. It was a pain in *** and was not worth the weight penalty and several thousand dollars to purchase, reconfigure, retune, reprogram/burn a chip (55pin chip easier than OBD2), route the braking vacuum and other vacuum reservoirs and miscellaneous annoying details.

FYI, the Supercup 3.8L 993s run with the black plastic intake manifolds that are on 1994-1995 993s. You can get great flow out of those 3.8L plastic manifolds and they are very very light.

If you have a 1994-1995 993 and are looking for power there are many simple bolt-on changes that anyone can make and get the power over 300HP without going into internal engine changes. Even if you make internal engine changes you dont "have " to put a varioram let alone a 3.8RS Varioram on the engine for maximum power.

Keep it simple is and lightweight is the best way to go. Maximum race quality intake performance for any normally aspirated 993 would require either Motorsport Designs intake system or Sam Shala's slide valve intake system. There is also a system in Germany and Switzerland that is RSR style with big tubes to feed a hungry 3.8 or 4.0Liter 993 or 964 engine.

Being in Switzerland and or Germany would probably make these conversion a piece of cake.......as Porsches over there are like Mustangs, camaros and Corvettes in the USA.

I would be interested too... Am highly skeptical... Remember, if anything is "simple", the question is why Porsche AG did not do it themselves... The non-Turbo 993 engine is not easy to squeeze extra hp out of... The curve "cost vs hp gain" becomes quickly exponential...

Can resident 993 Cupcar owners confirm this, please.

P.S. No offence, Joe, just double checking.

Not a cup car owner but I have seen a few up close and personal. They do have the black plastic intakes, not sure if they are the same size as the ones for the street cars but they do look the same. Here is a picture from a Cup Car at a Viper event. Credit to EJ for the pics.

I personally checked the parts #s and the manifolds are the same as any garden variety 993 built in 1993-1995. The had 964 parts #s and 993 parts #s on late 1995 cars and all 993 Supercup 1996-1997 cars. Some sets are mildly ported and opened up for better flow. Not easy to do but we doit for several customers.........

Hi Joe,
You mean this modification is enough to result in the extra hp? Any side effects?
Thanks, Phil
