Default HELP! Can anyone explain this...passenger seatbelt getting hot!

I very rarely drive with a passenger...but its a beautiful night in Dallas, TX so my wife and I decided to take the 993 to dinner. She noticed that when she pulled her seatelt across to latch it, the portion that had been down in the housing was very hot. I checked and she was right...that passenger rear quarter area where the seatbelt retracts was warm. Driver side cold as ice. What could be causing this? Its got me very nervous...maybe something electrical? Something with the door lock mechanism/alarm? It seems to maybe cool down a bit after driving around, but that just may be the air cooling it...

Thoughts? Whats back there in that area that could be causing it? Again, checked the driver side and nothing similar.

I believe part of the oil cooling system carries hot oil along the car right below that housing . . . you can sometimes hear it gurgling (or, to some, its sounds like flowing water). That would be my guess.

ok -- so i guess the bottom line is no reason to be worried? everything with car otherwise working / functioning great.

only thing is, why would it cool down once driving, but be hot once car turned off....that part doesnt make as much sense to me...

and from your comments, can i conclude that there is not a similar oil cooling system/area on the driver side?

thanks!

My 96 did the same thing. There is a flap behind the interior rear quarter that lets air escape from the cabin. If it fails it will allow a constant stream of hot are into the seat belt retractor area. It can also make the passenger side a bit warmer.

Welcome to one of the many joys of a bad design executed brilliantly.

You'll note to passenger front fender is warm to hot after a drive as well.

That old oil stays hot for hours after turning the car off. Particularly in the tubes between the engine and oil cooler where your seat belt rolls up.

Don't worry, quirk of a 993.

You might want to check your options as you might have received the heated seat belts option!
