The CSI, in addition to being a little over budget (more than $45k, usually), is only available with a 6-speed. They had a BEAUTIFUL 94 Bk/Bk CSI with 34k miles at New Century BMW a week ago LISTING for $42.9! It was tempting despite the 6-speed, but sold the next day to a guy from SD.

Actually, I had a '99 E36 M3 convertible.....two, in fact, at different points. Not the ride I'm looking for......I should have titled this thread "luxury coupe with a sporty feel", rather than 'sports coupe"......

don't overlook the 8-series American predecessor, the corinthian-leather clad Chrysler Cordoba. unless Riccardo Montabalm lives in Manhattan Beach, you'd probably be the only guy there with one! i'm not sure what they are trading at now, but am confident there would be room in your budget for the 996 lightweight wheels. max

Mark,
I just saw a '94 Silver/black 840 at a used car dealer called Jama in Hermosa Beach (on PCH) last night. I did not have time to stop and look at the car, but you might want to check that one out if you haven't already. The windshield said "low mileage".

Thanks, David, I knew about that one, but didn't go see it. 94 & 95 840s had problems with the Nakisil engines and our higher sulfur content fuel. Not to mention I've never trusted any of the guys on PCH. Actually, I am in negotiations for a 1994 850ci, blk/blk, with 6920 miles on it!! I so excited I can't sleep.......been dreaming about 12 cylinders...........

how about a S500 coupe or a SL 500. You should find a 95 96 for around 35 or less.

I saw it earlier, but an xk8 coupe is a killer car with great lines. For a just a little bit more you might be able to find an XKR coupe and they flat out fly, plus look incredible.

370 hp, great GT car that is unique and only 3 years old!

Yes, I considered an SL500, and the fact that it has a hardtop was intriguing. But I drove a '98 last week, and hated it. It had absolutely no soul whatsoever. I'm not a big Mercedes fan to begin with, though. They are terrific cars......just not for me. I'm not a fan of Jaguars, either..... I'm not crazy about their looks or their reliability.

I've been checking my crystal ball, consulting with the powers that be, and I KNOW you are going to find the BMW 840/850 coupe you long for very soon! It's like looking for that "perfect" woman, when you kind of give up, they appear out of nowhere, when you least expect them to. My wife turned up that way. So did my current 993, and my last 88 911.

The 94 850i seems like a great bet! I know that when I was looking for a car, I had this long laundry list of absolute musts... but when I found a car that was close, I threw my musts out the door an accepted a car that was similar. Like in your case, it's a ridiculously low mileage black car, and not a silver one. Black is the BEST color on that car by far... except for keeping it clean. And that's easy - you just keep it clean, washing it a bit more often. Then you have the best dang looking GT coupe in your neighborhood. Nothing like a black 850i 12 cylinder behemoth. We had one for a short while, a 91, and it smoked down the highways. Ate up pavement like the GT cruiser it was. It just looked plain, SICK! Sick as in, "good sick ".

Good luck. Keep us informed!
Steve

Not going to wag a jag flag (not trying to be a poet either) but from everyone I've ever talked to and all I've read the newer ones are a heck of a lot more reliable than a 12 cylinder BMW.

Well, the 850 does have potential problems......since the engine is two six cylinders mated together, it has two of everything, so it has twice the prospect of things going bad. And the parts are sometimes difficult to come by, and are VERY expensive.

However, everyone I know (including Mom) who owned a Jag had nothing but problems with them. Each new model year the salesmen tell you that all the electrical problems have been worked out, but I've known people with brand new Jags have had the engines just cut out at stoplights from time to time, with no apparent reason or solution to the problem. One female attorney I know can't wait to dump her 3-year old Jag and go back to BMWs......
