Default OT: software for mapping routes??

Does anyone know of, or use a software program that allows you to map a routes and save a jpg with some detail? One that is fairly inexpensive, easy to use and allows for zooms in and out? I saw MS had a program called Microsoft Map it, but its 200 bucks and I'm sure there's something else out there. Suggestions anyone? Mapquest is not a good option.

Thanks much!

I have MS Map Point and it is great. I don't remember the price, but I like it.

I use Microsfot mapPoint also (from my MSDN subscription). Standalone price is 3 figures - not cheap. Microsoft Street and Trips is only $10-$20 after rebate at Costco, and will do what meet your needs.

Delorme Street Atlas is my other favorite, with a GPS connected, it can be use as a talking navigation systems.

btw. I have been doing GIS(Computer mapping) , mainly esri products, for over 17 years.

Would one of you be interested in helping me map something for a run this weekend? I looked in Staples but I only saw MS map it for 200 which I think is the same thing Randy suggested (map point).

I've tried Street Atlas USA 2004. It absolutely stinks:

a) Street I live on not on the maps. Guess it takes time to upgrade software; after all, street's only about 20 years old.

b) Have tried using it to map routes. It's horrible; roads/routes it picks are an absolute joke. For example, on one route where I know interstates are the best route, it picks local dinky routes because by the overhead view it looks like the straightest line. No choice of different route type options will make it pick what I fel is the best route.

c) Trying to add map notes is a royal PITA. I find it very difficult to revise a note when I initially screw up creating it.

What makes it worse, I think the older version (Street Atlas USA 8.0) was better.

I swear by MS Streets and Trips.. Absolutely wonderful. You can even search for local ATM's, restaurants by type, autoparts stores, hotels, airports, you name it, it will find it. Another feature is it will give you best route with a time, distance and approx. fuel cost..

Best of all, its only about $30 max..

has anyone tried the new MS Streets and Trips that comes with the GPS tracker ?? I think it lists at $129. I saw it for the first time a few days ago. IIRC $99 on sale or after rebate (can't remember that part)

Rand-McNally.com. Free maps for roadtrips with multiple stops. IMO far superior to MapQuest.

This is the best mapping and routefinding site I have found, with infinitely scalable maps:

I use MapPoint to export to Pocket Streets and trips for my Smartphone. Works very well!

Thanks Graham!

That's one heck of a map site!

It even perfectly found my house in Finland which is in rural country area, I mean my house is not in the middle of nowhere but you can see it from there and this map site found it spot on.

Actually better than my house here in Miami Beach...

I have found map24 better and more detailed for planning routes in Europe than the US. It found my sister's address in a little village in Belgium. I have been trying to apply it to the Nor-Cal run from Auburn to Grass Valley, and it can't find a proper route without running in circles. Possibly because there are barely even any one horse villages along the way.
