Post Sad quote in this month's Excellence

I know we've all heard it, and all know it, but this was startling to read in print:

The C-GT started life as a prototype race car . . . Then the factory decided to pull the plug on racing to focus on building SUVs.

This is on page 83 of the June 2003 issue in the article on the upcoming Carrera GT. It's kind of stunning and disappointing to see it so matter of fact.

I understood that the GT was a prototype race car but the Le Mans rules were changed late, so the car could not be entered.
Rather than abandon the project, Weide... decided to continue to build it for the road.
Theres still a possibility that they may develop it for the 2004 Le Mans when the rules are changing again.

The LMP prototype that Porsche developed after the GT1-98 was simply aborted. They had already developed the car and the V-10 engine, and McNish and Wollek were shaking it down. Then Porsche pulled the plug, for all the reasons that are hard for us to swallow: need engineers for the SUV project; need to put the money to other uses; we'll be back in a short year or two; "Le Mans may not provide the kind of exposure we need" (Weideking). Ugh.

I wouldn't expect a top class (LMP or GTS) factory effort before 2005/6 at the earliest. At the end of 2002, Porsche formed a committee to study their options for returning. They are still studying. All of this is publicly available in Panorama, 911 & Porsche world, and various online motorsports sites (dailysportscar.net)
