I'd go sort of with Greg said.

Sell the other car (and since you can't use your 993 as a daily driver) buy some $1500 used Honda, old blazer or something.

I always did that in Finland, kept my 911 ingarage for winters, had ok car for my wife and then some cheap winter car for getting work (lat one was 1973 lifted up blazer, god damn ugly and nasty looking 4x4, but fun to drive & I couldn't care less if someone sees me in a ugly car.

I have 'issues' with my wife every now and then, but so far I've been able to convince her and she's been pretty good.
I was 'nut' before she met me and I ain't going to change just because she wants to (I can change but there needs to be a good reason, not just if it's somthing she thinks she might like better.

One older guy once told me when I was complaining how time foes too fast etc.

He said something like this:
"it's not the time that's going too fast, it's been going same pace thousands and thousands of years, it YOU who is going too fast.
He can see I'm a good father, take care of my family etc. but that I have to think what's in it for me?
Am I happy? In the end, you only have one life so you better think yourself also, are you happy if things go like they do or do you have something you will regret not having, not being able to do etc. when you're lying in your bed dying?

Like him, I'm not asking people to be selfish, hel1 no! I'm asking:
What's in it for you, GTR?
Are YOU happy enough (we people are never totally satisfied) if you do this?

Get the $1500 daily beater and sell the other car.
Then buy better car when you can affor again.
That would also sho her that you really 'need' this car.

3200 sq ft !!!!!!

You obviously haven't lived in the uk have you - that's an entire street !

My last house was 1500 sq ft, and our present place is around 2200.
Sell the boat and tell the wife to work a 5 day week if she wants the bigger house

Cheers,
John.

There's always a way! As interest rates are so low..tuck it into a second mortgage.Get the extra interest write-off.By the time you are done, any good accountant worth his/her fee can make it look as though you are getting the P-car for next to nothing.

When we moved from Calif. to Mass., we had 3 months of living in a one bedroom apartment. We went from 3100 sq. ft. house to one bedroom apartment back up to 2800 sq ft house. The 2800 sq. ft. house feels like a freakin' mansion after that experience.

When we moved to the 3100 sq ft. house, we moved from an 1800 sq ft. house in san francisco. It was way to much room. So much went wasted, I don't think I'd want much bigger than what I have for awhile.

And, while we were in the apartment, I didn't have my p-car. That was the worst part of the deal. I couldn't believe I would actually MISS the car, but I did. I just got the car back from EPE, and now I know I can't part with it. Just try parking your car and not driving it for a couple of weeks, then get back in. You won't sell.

I would cast a vote in favor of buying a beater. My wife has her 7 Series BMW, our luxo sedan and partial kid hauler (2 yr old twin girls).

I have my TT for a weekend car.

My everyday car is a '96 Ford Explorer with 90K miles. It is full leather and very nice paint. I carry my dog, kids, plants for garden, lumber for projects etc...I LOVE IT! All for $6K.
- I change the oil myself as well as minor DIYs.
- I can park it anywhere without issue.
- My wife and I take this car to SF for dinner when we know we will valet...no worries.
- We also take this to Tahoe (Snow country) and load it full of junk.

It is nice to drive a car like this on a daily basis...it makes driving the TT just a bit more enjoyable, if that is possible.

Just a thought...

We moved from a 3200 sq ft house in TX to a 1900 sq ft house in CA, and at 3x the cost too.

Even raising 2 kids we rarely if ever miss the extra space, we still have a guest bedroom.

Now garage space is a different story, what I'd give for a nice 4 car garage....

I would suggest renting the wife instead...you might make more money.

Mine was donated to charity for the tax write-off.

You reminded me one time I was browsing the net and came accross a project in Arizona where a developer was building a race track and houses around it. The houses really were garages/shops with a bedroom and kitchen attached
I called my wife and said: "Honey, I've decided, this is the plan for our next house " She gave me the killer look and said "you wish" and left the room

heh heh heh, Danny I don't even want to think the response my wife would have given

One of the reasons we moved was to get a detached place, and (for me anyway) a bigger garage.
The wife used to say I couldn't buy any more toys as we had no room. I've overcome that argument now

Funnily enough she has gone and bought another car this evening as a cheap runabout (one of our other cars has failed its emissions test, so she decided a cheap runaround would give us (me!) time to fix it).

With my sensible head on for a moment, I can understand why you want to move up the property ladder while you have the chance. We are doing some major building work this year, which has ruled out most of my track days, and our holidays too
It'll be worth it though. And just think, when you come to buy another one they will almost cetainly be cheaper !

3500 square feet means higher property taxes, adding a pool for the kids, higher electric bills, New wood blinds and floors etc... I sold my boat bought the house paid for all the above with boat procedes and then bought the car. Just add the p-car into the mortgage and ask for forgiveness later. She will never know because she will be to busy with interior designer. Just kidding. Good luck and have fun at Home Depot.

Greg:

Look at it this way. If you sell your car for $45k, that is the equivalent of $266 per month in a mortgage payment(assuming you put that 45k into the down payment). It would be less if you went I/O for 5 years.

Sell the boat. Remember, if it floats, flies, or f@#$k's, you are better off renting.

You say you're now living in best school district (and new house would be in different area.

Ask what is the so important to your wife (in that new house) that she thinks you have to give up your loong time dream car (and a bout), car that in those stressful, painful moments gives you relaxation when you blast on the highway (or better yet, at the track) making you less stresfull and therefore, better husband and father?

And ask what is the so important to your wife that becasue of that reason, your kids can no longer be in the best school?!
Isn't that the most important think to her (since you still can live in nice area, large house etc)?!
