Post Rapid clicking sound when turning key . .

Could it me the DME relay? Or a dead battery.
I read the posts, recent and old on DME but couldn't find symptoms similar to mine other than the car would not start.
Mine won't start but I do hear a loud rapid clicking sound.
I haven't gotten around to getting a spare DME yet so will have to wait until Monday, unless it's the battery. My car is a 1996 and it's had one battery replacement but I'm not sure when.

A bad battery or starter motor will make this sound.

Yes indeed; a 97.4% probability, weak battery.

Same thing happened to me in February after not driving the car for four weeks due to the snow storms. Rapid clicking noise, just enough juice to power some lights and the stereo. Weak battery. Charged it up, drove it around, bought a Porsche battery maintainer and haven't had any problems since.

Hey Mike in Chi, how was the Duke graduation?

When the DME relay is bad the car will turn over just fine. It just won't start because there is no fuel reaching the system.

happenened to me last week Howie.

I put in a new battery and all is ok again. In fact my battery must have been dying for a while at the car now starts stronger and even the central locking sounds a bit faster.

cheers

Speaking of batteries...what is the model of the Optima Red Top that fits our cars?

(I know, I know...."use the search" - unfortunately I am on dial-up in Hanoi right now and bandwith here is an issue - had to turn off the graphics for Rennlist site to load decently!)

Thumbs up

Hi Howie,

It happened to me when I put a new battery (Bosch heavy duty) in that was faulty and didn't hold it's charge. If your battery is not too old you should be able to get it replaced under guarantee.

Cheers,

David

Greg,

Any chance you have a picture of the 75/35 in installed your car(s)? I wanted to post a picture of an installed 75/35 on an Optima battery thread over on the 964 board.

I think 993s have a rigid positive terminal with 90 degree bend that must be accommodated, as does the 964.

Here's the thread:

Randall, I don't have any pics of the battery but it was a straightfoward installation from what I remember.
If I get a chance I will try to borrow a digital camera and take a couple pictures.
