Default Best car/race movie

What's the best car/race movie in general and is there a good movie that has a 993 featured in it?

I'm interested in your opinions.

Grand Prix & LeMans...

I've also heard some great things about Rendezvous, but have never seen it.

A movie I enjoyed that uses cool cars to good effect is Ronin; some very nice A8 four wheel drifting in there. Notably, Ronin was directed by John Frankenheimer, who also directed ... Grand Prix.

If you are including motorsport videos, not just Hollywood output, then Faszination, by RUF, is well worth a watch.

As is the Alzen video I just posted two previews of in another thread.

Ari Vatanan's classic Pike's Peak hillclimb is pretty amazing.

Frank Stippler's video of him doing the 'Ring in a GT3 is also one of the best Porsche films.

And I posted a video a while back of a 911 rally car driven by Gilles Nantet which is really edge of the seat stuff.

(do a search for links to all of these).

I don't know of any good 993 ones. Maybe we can encourage someone here to make one?

Graham

Actually, one of the original 993 sales videos, "Can you hear it..", narrated by Patrick Stewart, was terrific.

Like the kid in the dealership today, it captured what goes on inside us.

I'll second that vote. The 'can you hear it' video is awesome!

How about 'Driven'? Only because I am it the movie as a race mechanic

Winning (how Paul Newman got into car racing)
Bobby Deerfield
Days of Thunder
A Man and A Woman
Bullitt (I know, but those two cars were racing)
SuperSpeedway (An IMAX movie with Andretti Father and Son)

Flagg: Steve McQueen's two finger salute is the British equivalent of our single digit salute. Not to be confused with Churchill's other "V" salute. It is said to originate at the Battle of Agincourt. The French army bragged beforehand that they would slice off the two bow string fingers of the reputed British archers. After defeating the French, the British archers proudly showed them the two fingers that had led to the French defeat.

Different cultures, different meanings...

In Italy a variation of that two fingered gesture means "Bring the pasta course..."

The still from the movie makes it look like an insult. In the film, it comes across as a joking "up yours"

Mike, no SAG for me as I was one of the 'real' race mechanics in the background, from actual race footage

Interesting note: They filmed that movie over the coarse of the 2000 CART season, at a majority of the North American tracks. They didnt fim with us in Japan or Australia.

To simulate the Motegi track, they filmed at the Chicago oval track on the Monday following the race (we were there turning the cars around to road coarse trim for a two day test at Road America). Anyhow, the track was transformed to look like Motegi in that all the advertizing billboards were changed to that of the Motegi track. Also, literally several hundred Japanese 'extras' were there for background fans.. Really cool to see..

They used many Indy Lights chassis for the crash scenes. Most were shot out of a cannon into the wall for that footage..

Another funny story, at Cleveland, I was flat towing our car from the track to the paddock with our electric flatbed cart. This usually is a trying time for us as you have to get the car back as fast as possible in order to get the car serviced and ready for qualifying. Also, you have to deal with all the fans, which are usually oblivious that they are in the way, but part of the race event no less. So I am on the horn, asking fans to 'WATCH YOUR TOES', 'COMING THROUGH'. The group in front of me cleared the way and there was an old man in a wheel chair that wasnt moving out of the way...So I was yelling at him to move it (please)...as I got by him I noticed it was Burt Reynolds, all made up in his wardrobe....OOOPS!

OK I have to watch Le Mans and I will definately check out the others mentioned. I'll use this thread as ref. in future. I just got a new DVD/TV set up and got a month (Netflix style copy) from Blockbuster.

Rain brings me some break from work and my girlfriend likes Movies. So I figure I'll sneak some car stuff in and hope she thinks the lead is cute. Wish me luck.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe it's the "V" sign for victory.
