Post 993 Exhaust System Recommendations

Good morning all:

I am looking for a streetable exhaust system that is lighter than the stock setup and one that increases HP/torque. Ideally, the system would retain stock heat, meet Georgia emissions requirements and produce civil exhaust volume levels.

I know this has been discussed before and I have tried most of the bolt-on muffler options. Additionally, I have used S-Car-Go headers on a previous car that was dedicated to the track and I swear by them even today. They are light and make great power at the top of the RPM range – just where you would want it in a race. They are totally unsuitable, however, for a street car.

I know Cargraphic sells sport cats and it looks like headers too. After purchasing and installing their aux oil cooler, I am convinced that they produce a high-quality product even given their high associated price. What else is on the market? What have others used? I would be interested in information that compares or contrasts weight to stock and performance to stock.

Thanks in advance,

Hank

Along these lines (and I don't mean to detract from your questions Hank- may be add to them) has anyone actually tried the Fabspeed Supercup system? Does it fit? Does it actually add any horsepower (or reduce torque)? How loud is it? What's the quality like?

I'm very intrigued by this product (especially the light weight) but have heard horrible things about Fabspeed fitment and service... and feel the HP claims are wildly inflated.

Alternatively- what about Borla and GHL? I've heard very good things about both of those products.

George:

I should have made my post more clear. I am NOT talking about mufflers. I am interested in a complete exhaust system, or exhaust system components, not just the typical cat-back "system."

Regarding the Fabspeed Supercup mufflers, I have a set and just took them off my car. They are awesome for the race track. The car sounds amazing and in the context of the track, I am not aware of a better option. For the street, that is an individual preference. My car has no sound insulation and, as such, with the Fabspeed Supercup mufflers on the car, I can’t have a conversation on the cell phone or take the car on a trip longer than one hour due to the exhaust volume.

As far as fitment is concerned, my set has fit my car perfectly in the past; however, I can’t make one side line up. It must have become bent in shipping when I loaned them to another Rennlister.

AFAIK none of the streetable exhaust systems will add any meaningful hp, and at worse will decrease hp and torque. Any advantage gained would only be in reduced weight and PERHAPS improved throttle response.

I have B&B mufflers on one car and there is an annoying resonance, and no discernable power increase. I have Supercups on another - no meaningful power gain but the throttle does seem a bit more responsive. The Supercups are very loud though esp as mine need to be repacked (my neighbors have not complained yet as it is still quieter than the Ducks ).

I know that EVERYONE has a muffler story and I would love to hear them all! I would also love to learn more about headers and cats and actual performance and weight savings information. By the way, the car in question is a 1995 Coupe.

Hank,

I suggest you call S-Car-Go racing. They are a very reputable outfit and make a high quality but expensive full system. They can tell you exactly what to expect with going this route.

Good luck,

I installed GHL mufflers on my C2S earlier this year. The fitment was absolutely perfect, it took less than an hour to do both sides. The quality of the welding and material was amazing. I have not dyno'd my car so I can't say there was any HP change (+or-). It does seem to be a little more responsive though. I just wanted something a little more "noisy" than stock. GHLs are just right for me....not too loud, but much better than stock!

I just recieved a small commission so I have a little $$$ for a muffler upgrade. One day I'd like to get my car out to PIR here in Portland. This track has a noise restriction so I'd have to be a little careful when upgrading mufflers. The fabspeed and RSR's are on the top of the list though I do not know the difference in db level.

Cool

I don't know about any HP increase, but once I installed RSRs on my car; I noticed that my gas mileage has gotten substantially worse.

I like the sound so much I always keep it high in the rev range!!!

Randy M - if you have noise restrictions you should probably stay away from the Supercups. Rennlisters have had mixed experience with the RSR passing noise restriction. Also, they seem to have a tendency to get louder/raspier as they age. That said, I have heard them and they are very nice sounding

David, I wasn't thinking about getting the supercups but rather the maxflo's. The supercups have a rep for being very loud and resonant and I'd like to stay away from any resonance. I had a Boss 302 Mustang w/ flowmaster 40's on it. I couldn't drive it an hour before having to get out of it and take some advil.

Randy, I have Maxflo's and have had no problem with Laguna Seca's noise restrictions. There is some minor boominess around 2600 rpm (doesn't bother me), but just use that as an excuse to keep the revs at 3K or higher.

Randy M - I just put Fabspeeds on my car and RSR's on a friends. Both are louder than stock, obviously, but the Fabspeeds are louder than the RSR's. Some resonance at load 2500-2800 RPM.
That being said I love the Fabspeeds. I'm frequently in Portland let me know and I'll let you listen! Or come down and listen to them both, back to back.

Hank - I am also interested in the cargraphic sport cats. They have posted some optimistic hp ratings with sport mufflers (20+ hp). I really think that our cars breathe fairly well. In fact I've heard that placing the cat-bypass pipes on the 993 will actually decrease hp? I guess some backpressure is essential. The headers on the 993 are not of equal length but a huge improvement over the previous crossover arrangement. I don't think after market headers will give you much advantage at all except perhaps a few less pounds.
