Post car-to-trailer clearance?

For those of you who trailer your car:

How much space do you have between the rear fenders/wheels and the sides of the trailer? I'm looking at towing mine for the first time this weekend, and the interior width of the trailer is a whopping 75 inches. By my tape measure, that's 2.5 - 3" on either side of the car.

Is this considered perfectly safe & sane, and should I just suck it up & drive on? Part of my paranoia is that I don't expect to have a competent helper ensuring I'm nicely lined up on the ramps before I drive on.

That is plenty of room. Quit being a wimp!

Now if you have to back that trailer into a spot with only a couple inches on each side, that is a different story.

hey Greg that's easy for you to say.

Like Robert, I'm finding the loading of my car on to the trailer a little unnerving. To me, I can't see the ramps once I start to get the car onto the trailer. Maybe having my seat bolted to the floor isn't much of a help. I do need a spotter until I get used to doing this. Or find a good placement for the car and mount some permanent wheel chocks on the end of the ramps, so I don't drive too far forward

Todd

Now wouldn't a HWFM banner look nice on my car?

Try putting a piece of tape on your trailer fender that you can use as a marker, so that you don't go too far forward.

Sears sells small fold up chocks you can also use.

Nice looking car by the way

One idea is to run a piece of tape where the driver's front tire needs to be. You can open the door and look down to make sure you are on target that way. My old trailer I would back my car on and it was easy to see if I was on target by the amount of room I had.

I felt that way as well when I first got my trailer and starting loading it myself. Now it is a no brainer....you will get use to it!

Let see, Robert and Greg are both scheduled to be at Putnam in Sept for the PCA Race.

Maybe we can have a HWFM Race Trailer Olympics there.

Any member with a trailer can compete.

We'll set up a narrow space between Anir's TT and Greg's race car, and see who can maneuver his trailer into that space in the fastest time.

If you hit either car it will be a five second penalty added to your time for each contact.

I think Mark would fly in to be a part of that competition.

Just to add to the fun, we could do it at the end of the party Saturday evening

What do you guys think?

Speaking of trailers. I assume everyone has not put our $5000.00 for a Trailex or Featherlite!!! What are you guys using nd how long are your ramps to insure you dont scrape the [paint off those front end splitters or drag the rear end for that matter??????

Mike,
Another great idea. Let's just substitute something more challenging than my 993.
I heard that 944's where good for something, maybe this is what they meant.

Paint? No such thing on my front splitter.
Get lots of lumber from Home Depot is my suggestion.

But the wildcard is that the owner of the "Pylons" gets to place a few landmines on the course. Kind of like the world series of russian roulette, you only get one chance...

Guys,
This is the best move I have made for loading/unloading:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43972&item=2414389908

& I paid $ 429.00 for mine from this same guy 6 months ago The wireless remote is awesome. It allows you to be anywhere. I stand next to the car, put my arm in the window & guide the it up on the trailer. Really helps if you have an on-off switch racing clutch like my Supercup. Much less stressful than driving it on.

Greg

Here's an idea for another event -- The trailer jump.

We get some of our ramps and put them on the main straight. Like a motorcycle jump.

Then we get a bunch of the 1S and 2S drivers (they are thrill seekers who will do anything if you tell them it is macho) to lay down in between the launch ramp and landing ramp.

We take turns jumping with our tow vehicles and trailers.

Cool, huh?

PS Are you making fun of water-pumpers?
