Post V8 Shape of Things to Come

This (see link below) article in Autoweek seems to give credence to the new 911 having V8. Will this chill the purists toward the 911 as it did to the 928?

Thanks Carlos. I was just half joking half theorizing. I am a little shocked to see an eight possibly offered. thanks for the info.

The article also mentions the flat 8 which produces more than 450hp. That ought to help placate the purists.

There's also an 'unsubstantiated' rumour in 911 & Porsche World that a twin-turbo V8 Cayenne has "beaten a 996 model 911 Turbo round the Nurburgring circuit."

Yeah right... I guess it must have been my Mum driving the 996 in question, stuck in reverse...

In which case, according to data posted on this forum a long time ago from Sport Auto, it has also beaten the 996 GT3, Diablo SV, 360 Modena, Viper GTS, 993 TT, F355, and other lesser competitors, since the 996TT beat all of these cars around the Nurburgring circuit.

I'll bet that rumor concerns the V12 BMW SUV that Hans Stuck recently set a record with at the Nurbering.

Entirely possible and believeable - in winter with 6+" of snow on the circuit!

I have no objection to the V8 thing, although it does rather change the flavor of the car. I mean, after all, how many other cars have stayed so close to the same for so long and kept the same name?
Corvette and Thunderbird are just about the only similar evolutions that I can think of off the top of my head, changing body styles, price brackets, and engines throughout their legendary (or not so) histories.
Most other cars, though, don't seem to have this longevity or change of flavor. The RX7, for example, went from a budget sports car to a high powered turbo technocar, but always retained the same engine configuration. The Z-car from Datsun (later Nissan) went through a variety of straight-sixes before settling on a V-6 with and without turbocharging, but at least the Z-cars changed names!
I always wondered how the very different versions of 911 and 928 were always called 911 and 928, but the four-cylinder cars had three different names for the three major configurations. I suppose that was mostly because two of them were sold at the same time...

Anyway, like I said, I have no strong objections to Porsche's putting a V8 in the new Carrera. It would give those pesky Italians one less thing to flaunt!

Oh, and whenever I hear "The Shape of Things to Come" I always remember the guy with the wedge-shaped garage for his TR7. We all remember what came of that!

Jon

Mustang is only a year or two younger* than the 911, and it's still the same configuration, even down to the live rear axle (unless you buy the Cobra)

I guess we should deduct however for the Mustang II.

Mike,
That's true about the Mustang, except that the lesser Mustangs have switched between 4-cyl and 6-cyl engines. I have the last of the live-axle Cobras. At least I have one car with "heritage".

So, Glenview, ey? You a PCAer? Should I know you?
