Default Pre Purchase Inspection - LA/OC California

This is a great site. I am in the market for a 993 Cab and would like to know where to go for a pre purchase inspection in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. If possible, I would like to have at least one for OC and one for LA. In addition, I need to know the best place for regular service.

I have owned several 911's in the past and have been without for the past 5 years. I currently have a Cadillac Escalade EXT and an Infinity G35. The Infinity is my wife's but I convinced her that she could drive the EXT after I sell her G35. We also have a 5 month old child. From researching the web, I am convinced that I should be able to fit a child seat in the back seat.

Needless to say, I am very excited to get back into the Porsche family. The hardest thing was convincing the wife to get rid of her G35.

Welcome to the site. There is a 95 polar silver cab at European collectibles in newport beach. Low miles (25k or so), lightly optioned, asking $38.9. Car has been on their lot for over six months so they may be motivated to move it. Site is www.europeancollectibles.com. No affiliation with the car or lot. I've been watching this car for a long time and am not sure why it hasn't moved.

I used TRE in North Hollywood. I liked the mechanic who worked on my car a lot. His name was Tyson. For OC, try Hergesheimers in Lake Forest.

I don't know about a five month old in the back seat buy my kids who are 8, 6, and 3 fight to drive with me in my car.

Good luck.

James,

On the Westside I've use German Autotech on 19th Street in Santa Monica for many years with 3 different P-cars. No problems ever.

That car in Newport looks great, especially if you can get them down a bunch. Alternatively, my neighbors are selling their 96 C-2 Cab w/66k miles and a 6-speed. They consigned the car to a dealer who's asking too much. If interested, contact the owner directly and I know you can get it for a lot less. They are the second owners and had the car for 5-6 years. It's beautiful!

I'll second TRE. Very knowledgeable and customer centric. Further south in Torrance I highly recommend Callas Rennsport.

I would like to thank everyone that responded. I shall become a full member once the car is purchased. It looks like Hergesheimers or TRE is the place to go for the PPI, depending on where the car being sold is located. I hope I can add something to this site in the future, instead of just asking questions, however, I don't think I will be able to offer any technical advice on 993's until I have owned one for a while.

Thanks,
James

From the heavily damaged look of the cam tower, a sledgehammer was used to force the rod into place. I only discovered this a year later, so their 30 day warranty wasn't much good. Ended up costing me $1500 for a new cam tower. I have several more horror stories from this place and I know I'm not the only one.
Bottom line - can't go wrong with Hergesheimers or Callas.

Default PPI

I recommend Newport MotorSports in Newport Beach. Call Chris Miller at 949 642-5810. He's thorough, honest and inexpensive.

Post Marc @ Red Line

I'm the original owner of RLS; Marc took over the shop when I stepped aside in 1999. I just read comments made by "Craig MX7", and I'm blown away. Marc is a master mechanic who doesn't take a back seat to other shops mentioned in the List, and I had the pleasure to work alongside him for many years. I do not recall a single comeback during that time. Marc is thorough, works from an extensive service library (the biggest I've ever seen), and has always displayed a dedication to his customers. I'm skeptical about Craig MX7's critique because there is no such thing as a "30 day warranty" at the shop. Marc has always stood behind his work and is far too talented a technician to force or damage parts. He loves and owns Porsche's, maintains many of SoCal's finest models, from 356s to 996s, and can certainly be trusted to perform a PPI. Mistaken identity can be damaging, and I sincerely hope that a line of communication is opened and this issue gets resolved.
