Question Bosch Hammer Substitute? (Steve?)

I was looking at the tech section and came across Steve's comments on low cost substitutes. Can anyone send me any pointers?

JM:

Mixed news on this one,...there are some generic code readers for pre OBD-I and OBD-1 cars, Baum Tool makes a few.

In most cases, the Bosch Hammer is needed to perform Porsche-specific functions and read Porsche-specific codes from all of these cars, OBD-1 to OBD-2. No generic tool will do this as Porsche does not share their proprietary information.

What year is your Cup car? Does it have the square ISO OBD-II port or the earlier big round one? If the latter is true, then you MUST have the Hammer to do anything.

JM:

Sorry sir, you need the Hammer to do anything. The generic tools really do not work on these.

Hmmm, pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "Bosch Hammer"? Is it electronics that reads codes off the car computer, or?

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike:

The Bosch KTS-300, aka the Hammer (cause its kinda shaped like one) is the Factory scan tool need for servicing most Porsche cars, 89-97. The newest tool, the KTS-500, aka PST-2 is required for the 96-02 cars. This new tool will not work on 89-95 cars so one needs both of these to do anything with these cars.

Both are very expensive and are intended for Dealers & shops in the trade.

Hope this helps,
