Post key conversion

In Kevin Reillys post a couple of topics ago there was mention of replacing the old switch blade keys with new ones. I just bought a 96 993 Cab 2 wks ago down in Fla and the previous owner had done the conversion but only had one of the keys "programmed". He was going to get the second done before I flew down to get the car but did not have the time necessary as he claimed the dealer/shop needed the car for at least a couple of hours to complete the service. I am wondering if this sounds right and whether or not I can do the "program" myself since I have one good key.If I cannot, is this a deler only fix or can a specialist shop take care of it? Btw, the car checked out great at the dealer check up with the exception of a warped rotor(replaced)and both fan resisitors being defective or burnt out. I have heard and read that this is a common malady and the replacement resistors better but I am wondering how many other 993 owners have had the same problem. Thanks in advance for any comments.

The dealer needs an hour and 45 minutes to drink coffee while they bill you, then they will do the job in 10-15 minutes tops. I watched a dealer tech do it (free), and have done it myself once. The owner's manual is a bit tough to follow. The main point they skip over is that, when doing more than 1 remote, you have to start programming the next one within about 1 minute of finishing the previous one. They all have to be programmed together. For the spare battery wisely recommended by another poster recently, I advise putting one in a plastic zip bag inside the rear bumperette. Otherwise, the battery in the remote is dead, and the spare is in the car which is locked.

And maybe put a small phillips head screw driver in the zip lock bag as well, to take apart the remote.
