Post RPM Motorsport?

I've been looking around for a 98 C2S or C4S and found quite a few at RPM Sportscars in TX. Why are their cars so high? Anyone here ever dealt with them?

Check the archives... you'll find some strong opinions in both directions!

He claims his cars are superb examples in mint condition that warrant outrageous prices.

I would look elsewhere, given the current market.

When I was thinking of getting a 3.6 Turbo before my 993 I stoped by and looked at his inventory which was very impressive to say the least.
Hi is very high on his prices, the car I looked at was incredible I could not find not even a small ding on it. Others I heard did not have good experience. Like Robert said there are some strong opinions here...

Good luck!

Danny & Robert,

How recently have you been by RPM? They have a '97 C2S in Speed Yellow that has caught my eye. The price is quite high but I'm curious how the car looks.

Thanks much.

I haven't been in quite a while, but if you want someone local to eyeball something, I can help out.

Robert,
Thanks much for the offer but I don't want to put you through the trouble (yet); given the mixed reviews on RPM, the high price and the distance from home I'm going to look around a bit. If I want to come back to this car, I'll let you know.
Thanks again.

Rick, I was there last November. The cars I looked back then looked pretty flawless to me.
I wish I could go down there to take a look at the car you like but unfortunately I'm away from home...
However I'm sure Robert will help you out

Good luck!

RPM specializes in low mileage, high quality cars (mostly Porsche's). In January 2001, I began my search for a near-perfect 97 or 98 Cabriolet. 6 months and over 100 cars later, I ended my search with RPM. My 98 Cab had 5800 miles on the odo and was flawless. Yes, I paid a premium but the car was EXACTLY what I wanted. Ray Joseph was a pleasure to work with and complied with my many requests even though some of them were quite unusual.

With that said... If you search the archives you WILL find at least one other person who had a bad experience with RPM and Ray Joseph in particular. I have no reason to doubt their credibility or their dismal experience with RPM.

I suggest you look at RPM's inventory of "better than average" condition vehicles. If you find the car of your dreams, have it thoroughly checked out! At my request, RPM delivered the vehicle to Don McGill Porsche in Houston for a full inspection. I would never accept the word of a used car salesman regarding a vehicles history or condition.

In summary, RPM has some real gems on their lot (and their prices reflect it). If you find the right car for you, get it checked out by an authorized Porsche dealer. If they find a problem that wasn't disclosed, either walk away or negotiate on price. While my car was perfect in every way, I was still able to negotiate a sales price thousands of $ below their asking price. I suspect with recent softening of the high-end used car market, you would have even better luck now.

Regards,

MC

I have watched RPM, via the internet, for a while. I have read all the posts and am still wondering.
In light of this economy, the question seems to be: shouldn't all cars, even the pristine, see some devaluation? It's supply vs. demand, isn't it? RPM can't make money if they don't sell. So,
I conclude, there must be buyers willing to pay the premium.

Keith, I know the car you're talking about. It's in excellent condition. I bought my '98 car from Ray back in June of 2001, and have been very pleased. The car had 9100 miles on the ODO and was in absolute perfect condition. All his cars are in showroom condition. Ray is a pleasure to deal with, and is an enthusiast as the rest of us. If you have a concern, just have the PPI done.

As has been said, check the archives. My experience with RPM and Ray Joseph was a bad one. He sold me a car that he represented as flawless that it turned out had body and paint work. Don McGill Porsche did a pre-purchase inspection and said the car checked out fine. They later said that they do not inspect the body or paint, only the mechanical condition of the car. Be very careful. If I lived in the area and could personally have the car checked out, his cars may be worth a look. I would never rely on the word of a used car salesman like Ray Joseph or a dealership like McGill to do a thorough inspection.

I would chime in regarding the PPI done at Advantage Porsche ( ex Don McGill). Although I bought my car from Advantage due to my recent experiences with them I would stay away from them doing the PPI. Speaking with Joseph and although I have nothing negative against him , Advantage are in cooperation with him doing his financing on customer cars etc, therefore just this fact alone will preclude an honest PPI.
Furthermore, Advantage and their recent antics towards me reminded me a 3rd tier used cars sales establisment, certainly they have lost my business for ever!

I also purchased my 993 through Don McGill. It was the most frustrating car buying experience I've ever had. I would never buy another car from them again!

Don McGill also performed the PPI when I purchased my car in Houston (not from RPM). I watched much of the PPI, and it was very cursory / superficial. As it turns out, the car has been a gem, but I sincerely doubt that Don McGill's service department would have uncovered any flaws unless they were obvious.

I also agree with the wisdom of a separate body / paint inspection by a high-end, reputable body shop. Worth the investment.
