Fellow steering rack replacement suffers...
I continue to be amazed by my and your loyalty to this car, this marque, which asks us to replace steering racks like other manufacturers ask their constituents to replace wiper blades. Throw in the door straps, cowl paint bubbles, air conditioning expense(new ccu and 4 servo motors to the tune of 3k here),hanging clutch pedals, creaking windshields, DME failures, wiring harness failures, etc, and one could make a case for our being not too bright.
That said, I love my car and will continue to pour $ into repairs as they emerge. Love it as it is, warts and all. <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

RE: Lucas Oil - A friend of mine had a 944 that was leaking fluid and filled up with a bottle. Took care of his leak as well.
My 993 is in the shop having the steering rack replaced as we "speak". I might have tried the Lucas Oil trick if not for two conditions 1) It was leaking out of both seals 2) It wasn't really leaking, more like hemorrhaging
BTW - there is another 993 at the shop suffering from the same affliction.
And I still can't wait to have my car back!!!

73K miles on my '95 and no problems (presumably). Haven't crawled under the car to look but I think in about 7 years of ownership have had to add prob. 8 oz of fluid, if that.

You will have remove the front tray in order to see the steering rack.
A leaking rack will look something like the below picture.
Thanks Robin. I should have looked at your DIY.

diy job is out of the question for me, no tools or lift or replacement steering rack.
SO, what should I do?
I travel a lot, so I made the excuse to delay this appointment until may 27, so I have some time.
I would like to know if there are any serious problems related to delaying this issue, it's just aggravating when 50 dollar parts break on a 50K car it always costs 1500+ to fix...

I have had mine done twice over the last 8 years. Is it common knowledge that the early steering racks were more responsive and had to be dumbed down to stop people sneezing and steering into hedges - I was very dissapointed when I had my original rack changed I searched high and low for an original spec rack but to no avail.

The dealer quoted the parts only price of a replacement rack at $1700. I guess this is where the discrepancy lies with the rest of you guys. If I knew of another Porsche mechanic in the area I would gladly take it there instead, or even use the Lucas Oil-- it doesn't seem to be leaking that bad.

I replaced mine right after I bought it from the PO at 30K miles (replaced under an extended warranty). I think it ran about $2400 or so, not that I had to pay that.

Having read Robin's DIY article, I'd say this job is pretty doable at home with a little help and determination. There's no way in the world I'm gonna pay a dealer $2400 for a job that can be done in one day for $450 plus an alignment. If it were only a $200-$400 difference between DIY and a pro job, then I might not bother getting all dirty. But saving close to $2k can pay for a lot of DE reg. fees, beer, ammo, maybe even a B&B exhaust setup.

Any rebuild kits for the racks? if so, where can I buy them? Rebuilding them is really not that complicated, that's if one has knowledge about hydraulics. I have not check mine, I guess I have to now that several of you folks are experiencing the leaky racks.

Just a FYI, the steering rack for a 964 fits our car. In fact, the 964 rack is standard in the Euro 993 RS. It has a smaller turn raito than the 993 rack. Following Robins DYI, the job took me about 5 hours over a weekend by myself, not hard but messy. If you try it yourself, make sure to get the factory approved fluid and flush the system to make sure there is no metal frags in the system to cause problems later.
