Whistling noise and hole in engine shroud??? Please help!!
My 1996 CAB TIP started making a whistling sound from the engine compartment.
I pulled to the side of the road and noticed a hole in the rubber piece above the engine fan in the shroud.
Its a 3" hole and you can see the alternator through it.
I could not find anything wrong except for the hole.
I temporarily covered the hole with duct tape, but I can still hear the whistle.
It doesn't appear to get louder or change when you rev the engine.
The motor runs fine but I noticed that the auxiliary fan is no longer coming on.
I can't find anything that would of created the hole.
Any ideas???
Please help!!

I don't really have any guidance for you, but when my car was in for service, the service guy noticed a hole in my shroud. I had been in there recently and there hadn't been a hole, so it did appear very suddenly. I didn't notice any noise or symptoms, he just said to get a new one or engine cooling would suffer. Good luck!

Thanks TroyN for the response!!
That makes me feel a little better.
At least I know it happened to someone else even though I am curious on why it happens in the first place.
At least the part is only $40.00

Hi fetus,
I had once a whistling noise coming from the engine compartment. This appeared to come from the little wheel which is in contact with the fan belt. That wheel is turning as long as the belt is there. If it brakes, then a light will come on the dashboard.
Cheers
