Unhappy

No one has ever flashed me both when I had my 3.2 and now. I tried doing it for while as I had got used to it from driving my beetle but gave up.

I honestly think that you'll find 996 drivers improving as the cars age. The fact that we have people using the 996 forum is a positive sign of this.

Cheers,

David

I had the same responses where I live the 996 Drivers and even the Boxster drivers would not wave. And it was plain as day they could see me. The older 911's and 944' or 928's would always wave.

I was parked in a lot with a Red 996 a couple of bays down from me. My wife and I were sitting down outside eating and it just so happened the owner of the 996 was there to I saw him drive up in it. People were stopping on the way in and out mostly men with their sons and looking at the 993. I over heard the guy in the 996 say "It's a nice looking car but it's and OOOLD Porsche 911." I guess my 993 wasn't NEWWW enough to be a nice car.

Well, since odds of an older Porsche waving back to a newer Porsche is greater than the opposite, perhaps, we can have a rule where the newer car is to initiate the wave. That way the odds of getting rejected are less.

So it'll go like this:
996 vs. 993 -> 996 wave
993 vs. 964 -> 993 wave
and so on...

Of course we could complicate it and also have a pecking order (flame suit on!):
Air-cooled vs. water-cooled -> Water cooled waves

Then we have the "i'm not sure it's a porsche" category:
Cayenne vs. any other p-car -> Cayenne waves

Boy, I'm amazed at this thread that just wouldn't die...

I only flash if it's a female driver and I happen to have my trenchcoat handy. Weird thing is, they all yell "9-1-1" when I do it!

Hi guys,

Visiting from the 964 board. I definitly find more 'waves' from fellow M3 owners but today had a fellow 'Porschefile' tell me he was jealous of my 93 RSA. Bottom line IMHO is that those that actually 'dig' the marque and really are enthusiasts cannot wait to check out ANY Porsche they see/pass on the road. I personally don't care what year/model I encounter. I love them all. I just have a special fondness for particular models (ie 993 C2S's, RSA's, 94' Turbo slantnose, etc.)

Regards

I wave to boxsters and 996's all the time and they look totally surprised, I think most of them are leases, not really cars that they buy to keep.

That's the cool thing about the 993's, we know that the car we are driving is NOT THE NEW HOT THING, so we don't act like it is, and buy it to show off.

The 993 club is more exclusive, kind of like an inside joke that goes over everybody else's heads-they think that shiny-newer is better, but it's exclusivity and build quality that steered me into my ride.

oh well indeed...

Not to really "flame anyone"
The 944 is the "Inside joke" for any enthusiest. I also find it to be the best P-car. The build quality is good but I love driving my 944. Its so so so so so FUN! I dunno I know its not for everyone but its for me!. I would like to point out that A 996 doesn't desirve the 911 name. Sure it was ment to be the next evolution but its to diffrent. (to long), Weird doors that were previously basicly unchanged for 30 years. Same with the dash. The pedels are not floor hinged. Then there is water cooling which, I dont have a problem with but its the other things that get me. The last 911 to carry the 911 traits was the 993. Thats why its so special to me. I would also like to contest the "newer shinyer" Idea. I went to a P-car dealership and my 944 was out shineing the cars in the "Show room" and I can only imagine what my "pristine-Mint" 993 would look like next to them.

P.S. True the 996 is a Water boy but so are 924's-968 and that is confuseing. So please mention it as 996 or Rear Engine Water boys.

FWIW, there will always be enthusiasts and people who buy the car just for the marque. I myself prefer the air-cooled beasts, but out at the track I've come to meet many great people who drive water-cooled Porsches. There's good and bad in each...

Rear-engined water boy here, .

Just read some stuff about the 993 board, so I decided to check it out. Pretty interesting thread you've all got going here.

Porsche owners span the spectrum of humanity. From genuine nice to true blue a####les. I don't believe a particular car model delineates the car owners attitude.

With regards to waving/flashing/greeting, there aren't too many Porsches in my neck of the woods. There is a white 993, well kept, real nice, whose owner has never acknowledged a flash from me, and he always tries to zoom by me in traffic.There is a blue 914 that followed me into a gas station just to chat. There are 3 boxsters, 2 of whom greeted me with a bug eyed surprised look when I flashed and waved, and one who surprised me by flashing and waving. Then there is a GT2 that always flashes and waves, but then he is my neighbor. Not a nice neighbor, since he'll let me drive his car on the street but not on the track, heh-heh-heh.

I'm one of many silver 996's. Flash and wave me, you'll get a flash and wave back. See you all on the street and on the track

i never get any waves from anything unless it's a pre 964 911.

probably because the newer cars' owners are too busy smoking their cigars and dirtying up the interior for the true enthusiast ( the 3rd owners IMHO )

there is a huge difference between the enthusiast of a lifestyle and the enthusiasts of their cars.

Recent experiences of the week:

1. Passed by 2 993's, one on the freeway highway 101 north, and one on El Camino Real in Meno Park. Drove next to them and waved, no responses.

2. Drove by a 550 Spyder on highway 242 North through Concord, CA. I waved he waved back. I looked it up and down and it was a real 550 Spyder. Silver and VERY VERY nice.

3. Drove by a 996 Turbo, waved and he gave me an ugly look like my car is better than yours look.

4. Drove and followed and also he followed me 964. Very nice fellow who at the exit in Antioch CA rolled his windows down and chatted with each other. Commented how nice his Fikse's were.

In general I tend to find the new cars (ie Boxsters, 996 owners) as the typical new car Porsche buyer who buys it for status more or something to show off to other type. Although there are exceptions those are the types. Then when these 1st owners who then want the next latest and greatest thing, begin selling to the 2nd or even 3rd owners, that's when these people tend to be more serious enthusiasts

I wave or flash most Porsches I come across old or new, the chance of getting a response is about 1 in 4. At least in Houston.
I'm a first owner, enthusiast who ordered my new, Silver 911 when I finished training...a lifelong dream.
