Question What is a C2S really Worth?

I am the guy with a great 6-speed coupe that wants a tiptronic. I know of a very nice tiptronic Carrera S that the owner is willing to sell. The car is extremely nice 2-owner car with less than 20,000 miles. The current owner paid a premium, and now is expecting a similar premium on resale. My question is what is the premium that an "S" car (NOT 4S) should fetch over an identical non-S?

I know that a car is worth exact what someone is willing to pay for it. But I hope this group can lend some collective or individual wisdom to this question.

Thanks

I feel a 993 "s" coupe (with a medium range of goodies, 20,000 miles and a straight body) is worth $48-52,000 retail. A dealer would probably offer $43,000. This is my guess based on research of comparable cars that have sold or been for sale. I've see an 8,000 mile car holding out for 62,000 that I dont think has sold. A lot of things add up! Tires, wheels, stereo, trip computer, sills, motor sound, leather & more! No accidents, rain, snow or track. There are pampered pristine cars out there that w/ 20,000 miles will go for $55,000! But only a few. Most 20,000 mile cars will have some version of wear (tires, stone chip, rain driven, whatever). Look for service records & a qualified inspection.
Bite the bullet & enjoy it if it works out. The "s" is a unique & limited look.
Like any 993 or Porsche, the value is how much you can enjoy it.

Deano - What damage can you do by driving in the rain (aside from crashing)? I often hear sellers say "never driven in the rain", but the new 911s(since 76) don't rust, so what's the story?

Just curious,
Grant

I guess my point is that driving in the rain makes the under side of the car dirty. There are people who clean the underside of their cars with a special Q tip & trailer it to car shows. I guess it makes them more valuable. Anyhow, 15 years from now rust could be a factor? How much of a factor??? More than anything it is a show thing.

I just spent 8 months looking and a 1998 C2S with Aerokit in Artic Silver and in mint condition will easily go in the low $60's....and there are a number of these selling at that range. The 1997 cars are quite a bit less and the price drops rapidly for Tip, higher miles or less than mint condition. The C2S cars have actually been holding value better than the Turbos are about as well as the 1997 and 1998 C4S cars.

I probably overpaid some based on the mileage, but as they say, a car is worth what you pay for it. I just picked up (2 weeks ago) a '98 C2S with 45K miles for $45,000. It IS in impeccable condition, and the dealer certified it so it comes with a 1 year Porsche warranty. The options were somewhat limited, but it has an engine, and last time I checked that's what counts the most! Here's a link...

Chris, that sounds like a very fair price to me. And why do I always go to the fridge for a beer after seeing a post from you?? max <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Also looking at the underside of the car the oil lines going to the engine they were rusty, along with several bolts etc which I replaced.
All that on a documented with FSH South Florida car. I guess the rain or sea salt (most likely) played they role in this.

Max -

I feel the same... (beer) the only frustration (beer) I have is that I've only gotten (beer) to drive it once since I bought it (beer) I have no idea (beer) why you always feel you (beer) need a beer (beer) after seeing a post (beer) from me (beer) (beer) (beer).

John:

I paid $55,000 for my 97 S a few months ago. 11k miles, the S Aerokit, and pristine. I am rather picky when it comes to cars, and this one did it for me.

I spent little, if any, time researching what dealers would pay for the car or what others paid for similar cars (not a flame), because I didn't care. I wanted an "S" to keep forever and found the right one after many, many, many months of searching.

I was looking for a C4S for about 6 months last year. I ultimately decided to purchase a second owner car (28k mi) with a full set of records for $50k over a higher mileage car (40k mi) offered at $49k from a local Porsche dealer with no records (but warranty). I also preferred the C4S over the C2S due to the "big reds".

One big surprise were the cost of fixing small details. I have (and will continue to) spend a small fortune taking care of "small" and "minor" things such as replacement of stone guards, scratched upper door panel, removing center console non-OEM cup holders, installation of original OEM radio, CD changer, refurbishing the wheels - and of course the front protection bar.

Frank how hard was it to remove the rear fender clear protection? I am ordering some new ones and would like to install them myself. Thanks for any information you can provide.

I recently purchased my 96 4S for $39k with shipping! (42k miles) It wasn't perfect but I'm adding mods and wasn't looking for the "perfect P-car" (it's also Aventurine Green which some wouldn't buy)
My friend just bought a Silver 98 S in Houston with only 7k miles and paid over $60k.
Parked side by side my wife said "I'll take yours and the $20k+ to go shopping." (we aren't telling her about the mods though ;-)
Shop around....
