There seem to be two distinct schools of thought when it comes to buying a 993. One places more value on price and the other places more value on condition. Both are equally legitimate means of making a buying decision.

Personally, I choose to spend top dollar to get a car that was virtually new. My personality dictated that a perfect car was more important to me that was $10,000. I am glad to see that I am not the only person that suffers from this.

Usually an S car commands about $5k-7k over the regular non S car. I got mine 3 months ago, though it's a 59k mi C4S (I know, I know - you only asked about the regular "S"), for $40500. I'm amazed at "C4S Driver" getting a 42k mi 96 C4S for as low as $39k!!! Congrats on that great deal. There's a 96 C4S at Cherner in Potomac Md that's been there for 4 months now in Adventurine Green... They keep running an ad for it for $49k. It's got a beige interior. I wasn't wild about that combo at all on that car, and I'll bet it sells for about $40k tops.

If I were you, I'd get the low mileage, 2 owner car that you're interested in! You only go around once. You can shop and shop for the best deal, but if you find a car that's above your budget a bit, but a really sweet machine, I'd say go for it! I almost did that myself on a 97 C4S, but the owner and I were still about $2000 apart even when I was willing to pay $52k for a 97 C4S with $26k mi.

What's a couple thousand bucks difference really mean down the road after owning it and driving it for years and years?

I decided to buy a cheaper 96 as this is all we could afford at the time. It looks like a $53k car, all except for the odometer <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> .

Let's not get into that...I don't want any written evidence that could be held against me in the future. The wife doesn't need to know about the exhaust(s) and the PSS-9...

Steve,

Not meaning to be nosy, but didn't you post that you have put $4700 into the car right after buying it to bring it up to snuff?

No doubt, we will always hear of certain incredible deals but one thing that makes these deals so incredible is that they are the exception rather than the rule.

I would have loved to save some money on my car but I wanted to see it before buying and I wanted it to be in "perfect" condition. I would not have been happy with spending the money otherwise.

DC - Arghhh - you had to remind me of ... that? What a memory you have!!!

Yes - I did have to get a new clutch, front brakes, lower cam cover gasket, tires, which technically made the car cost $45,200. I like to think sometimes I only paid $40,500! Wishful thinking, I guess.

Yeah - I wish the car had less miles (59k mi)... but at the time I couldn't swing the difference in price for cars that cost $52k on up.

It's all good.

Steve,

You have nothing to worry about - you got an awesome deal on the second best color 993 ever made.

Having a 993 is miles ahead of not having one.

I took the same path as DC, though did and still wonder if there is a "right" path - and don't think so. I bought a mint '97 ocean blue C4S w/11,300 miles, sport seats, motor sound, etc, etc. It is perfect.

I sometimes wonder if I should have bought any one of several less-expensive, higher mileage, non-S cars, and who knows, someday, maybe I will. I almost feel like this one is too nice to screw up, but then schizophrenia sets in and I know I wouldn't be happy with a car in less than perfect condition, and I take it out for a spin.

Basically, I waffle. But I still go out to my garage and admire the car, I cannot believe I own it, and when I drive it, I feel happy. What more could I ask for?

Prices are all over the place. I found in a LONG search that you do, in general, get what you pay for. I insisted on perfect and complete records, a great car, perfect PPI, etc, etc. I was very wary of incomplete records or some gap in the data. I love surprises, but not when it comes to an expensive purchase like this.

Finally, there was a good post some time ago about buying a 993, something like you will always pay more than you wanted to, and as soon as you buy a car you will see the perfect car for less.... I don't know - I have not seen a nicer one than mine, so I don't quite go with the post, but it keeps things in perspective.

Get a 993, DRIVE IT, and enjoy it. As I said before, it's the best car I have ever owned.

Stedge - my feelings exactly. Funny how we both wound up getting our cars from the same source.

You know what I wish, that all you guys would put together a rennlist album with pics that was attached to you signature, so I could view your lovely 993's each time you post by just clicking on your album! I'd especially LOVE to see pics of DC's and Stedge's machines as I hear so much about them.

How do I do an album? Sorry to be weak.

Better go wash it and take some pix - once the rain stops!

I can point you to one picture of it - go to Europeanlocators.com, check out recent sales and see the'97 ocean blue car. Tha's the one I bought, but, no, that is not my garage!
