Default KW Coilovers

I don't remember anyone ever mentioning KW Variant 3 coilovers for the 993, and a search showed no results.

Does anyone have experience of these?

They have quite a good rep from the seat / audi crowd, also very good corrosion resistance. Not tried them myself.

Cheers, Al

I have heard mixed reports with other marques i.e Subaru and Mini. But when reading the KW spec sheets and sales blurb, seem to me to be a good product

That's what I was thinking. Lifetime warranty, stainless steel, TÜV-approved, made in Germany, and according to their website, suppliers to the performance divisions of Daimler Chrysler, Ford, Mitsubishi, etc

No experience with a Porsche, but my son has them on his VW GTI 337 and we're impressed with the quality and performance.

Paul - What do you think their sales piece is going to say?? "Hey our stuff is OK on most cars, but on few we really don't have it quite right". This is their Marketing stuff, and the feedback from customers is reality. Marketing and reality seldom intersect.

Welcome to the board BTW. Congrats on the first post....

Bob, should I be reading between the lines there? Do you have any first hand experience of these?

No Graham I do not have any first hand knowledge of this product. Nothing to read between the lines. Being an ex-sales and marketing guy this just struck me as a little humerous..

A lot of companies exist that make very good products and many main streamers may never have used them. For example, I never heard or ran JIC suspension, but looking at them made me want them because of the over look and quality they had. Well, 3 years later, my race car and I still ove them. They are awesome. Not to many people run JIC, but they are awesome. Same should apply to the suspension you mentioned. If they are adjustable and well made, they should work nicely

Graham,

My M5 buddies have KWs on their M5s. Generally good feed back except for bottoming-out issues. I have Ground Control coil overs on my M5 and it bottoms out very occasionally. The RUF NEVER bottomed out on PSS9s.

Does KW actually make a system for the 993? I know PSS9s are not available for E39 M5s.

Yes, here is the application sheet for the Variant 3's; http://www.kwsuspensions.com/v3apps.htm

They support BMW M5 from '99.

A question I've had about their shocks concerns their construction material. Stainless is good at retaining heat inside a cylinder of the stuff. How are they correctly cooling the shock off when it would, by it's very nature, retain more heat than even a mild steel bodied shock?

These are fairly popular in the Audi arena (as mentioned above). My friend has them on his '00 S4 and has had to replace one of the shocks three times. The shocks are made by Koni and although they are warrantied for life, they generally don't have spare items available for warranty work, so Koni has to either rebuild the existing set (read long delay without use of car) or requires a long lead-time for them to make a new, specially valved shock.

My friend is now planning on removing these and replacing them with the PSS9's.

However, YMMV.
