Question Cleaning Motive Products Power Bleeder

Hi all,

Just completed a brake flush prior to a DE this weekend with my Motive Power Bleeder and was wondering what methods y'all use to clean it up after using it.

I was contemplating partially filling it with distilled water and pumping it through the hose and connector for the master cylinder. Thinking this would clean it, dilute the leftover bits of brake fluid, and would evaporate dry if left out to leave it clean for next time.

Thanks,

Ben

Ben,

Honestly, I've never cleaned mine. Don't you think the fresh brake fluid that is pumped through the system each time would be adequate (as a flush)?

Anir,

That's been my operating assumption so far with no problems but it gets a bit nappier each time...

Does wanting a spanking clean brake bleeder say something about me?

I just take the container and turn it up side down over my oil pan and let it drain for a few hours.
Don't think you need to do anything else.

So that's why it's so clean!

Ben, I'd say that it means you take good care of your stuff, which is a good quality in my book.

I just drain mine also. I'd be weary of introducing water into the system, as it is bound to leave remnants somewhere in the pumping system. I too have the "cleaning disease."

Likewise; I just dump the old fluid out, close the lid, and slip it back in the box. NO WAY would I run water thru it; you're liable to pull water into the fluid, and that's the last think you want in your brakes (after air).

Besides, I would imagine the brake fluid lubricates the pump seals.

I'm under the opinion that that canister (Motive Power Bleeder) introduces air into to your brake system. I have adapted the methood to not even put fluid in the Power Bleeder. Just push air through it. I feel the Motive Brake Bleeder is a BAD design. My 2 cents.

Pookee,

I've never gotten a bad bleed using the Motive Bleeder, but had problems with suction-based devices such as the Griot unit.

Do you think you could have a bad Motive unit?

Yup pookee, you're a minority of one (unless we're all secret members of the Motive Conspiracy ). Just exchange the thing for a replacement unit!

Don't know what causes your air problem. I've found the Motive to be easy to use, fast & always effective. Much better result than the compressor operated "pro" vacuum unit (Vacula) I've used. Either you're using it incorrectly or it's defective.

BTW, I'm a bit (too?) compulsive about clean tools so I let the cannister drain & then do a light flush with brake cleaner spray.

Thanks Dan,

I'll try the brake cleaner spray.

Pookee - I've used it 4 times prepping the car for the track. I'm confident there is no air going into the brake system.

I'm with the others; totally disagree. No problems at all with mine. Used it several times.

Send yours back; maybe it's defective.

Wouldn't brake cleaner be just a wee bit too aggressive for a plastic bottle?

I am still wondering what you all do with the old fluid? My local dump takes motor oil, but I have no idea what to do with brake fluid. Should I just take it to one of those Haz Mat collections each year, the ones where they collect old paint etc...
