I love the Boxster S, and have driven them (fairly) hard at the track, but they are not going to be competitive with a 993.
If you've driven them both on the track, I'll go with your assessment. I guess I was swayed by an article in Excellence which favorably compared the S to a 911 on the track.

I have experienced Boxster's in competent hands and they are excellent Autox machines. I can't speak about the track because I haven't done that. So, it may depend upon what you mean by "track". If you mean a big track that favors the horsepower a 993 (drivers being equal) COULD be the ticket. I'm not so sure in a "through-the-cones" type situation however.
But, my vote would be for the 993 2 "S" or not. And do as others have suggested, save the bucks in the purchase and put some goodies on the car like the big brakes. YOU WILL LIKE IT!

I enjoyed the article but I agree it truly was a little thick- I get enough PCNA propoganda in Panorama so I hate to it reproduced in Excellence.
And I'll vote for the 993 non-S. I personally think it's the prettier car; it costs less and you can upgrade a lot of brakes (and other parts) with the savings. And I'll add one other recommendation so far not mentioned- it's virtually bulletproof. It's my understanding that the Boxster is anything but.
