Default PSS9 knocking noise while turning at low speed

Recently had a PSS9 kit fitted to my 993. At low speeds when making a turn anyway past halfway but before full lock I get a knocking noise. I notice it when doing things like 3 point turns.

Has anyone else had similar problems? I've emailed Bilstein and am awaiting a response.

Regards,

Sounds like the spring is not turning freely and when you do low speeds turns it binds up between the upper hat and the lower collar on the main spring. This will cause a knock or a boing sound. Usually PSS9s do not do this unless the lower plastic shim under the main spring is not in place, or it has been damaged. Other things to check are that the PSS9 turns freely in the stock rubber mount in front (and that the small and large washers are in place preventing the PSS9 upper hat from contacting the metal cup on the mount), or if you have monoballs make sure they are not seized....

Hi Bill,

I'd have the shop that installed it check it out...doesn't sound to me like it's a shock problem. Something may be binding at full lock.

Kim - Sound is definitely coming from the front.

Bob - Thanks for such a detailed reply. Bottom line is I'm convinced this should not happen. It's been back once and the verdict was that a little sound was normal. I'm not convinced. The sound to me is excessive. For a kit which costs around $3500 I don't expect it to sound like a tractor when I turn the steering wheel.

You are absolutely correct. Press your shop that did the installation to check it out more extensively. My PSS9s, nor any of the cars I've been in with PSS9s, had souch a sound. Be open to the possibility, though, that the problem may be wholly apart from the suspension installation (heck, it's an old car with old bushings, links, etc.that may have gone bad) so as not to sound accusatory to the guy doing the work. But if it IS the work performed, or a spring issue as VB suggested, your shop is responsible for rectifying it.

Ed - Thanks. I'm SURE it's to do with the PSS9 install. There was never any hint of anything similar before. Either way, the garage have had it back after I reported the fault and gave a possible reason for the noise but bottom line was it was decided to be in some way 'normal'. That CANNOT be the case. Our relationship is good so this is just just a case of getting some advice and doing some checks to get to the bottom of this.

Kim - This is a a fairly clear click sound. Not sure what a loose spring would sound like so can't comment on that.
