Having both (bone stock - except a UUC short shifter for the S4) I'd say the biggest engine/speed difference is that the C4 likes to live above 4K and the S4 below 4K. Once the C4 is above 4K the S4 would have a tougher time - except a chipped car.
The stock S4 is swift, but the handling is much more lazy compaired to the C4 - and the spongy brakes are the pits (If I do any mod it will be to put some Big Reds on the S4). The steering imputs of the S4 are good (the steering wheel is perfect), but there is no compairison to the road feel of the C4.
Guess it depends on what you want the car for - which sounds like tracking. Me, I love them both for different reasons, and I save my track driving for karts.
