In hopes that spring will eventually turn in New England, I searched for posts dealing with windstops for a 1995 Cab. One post suggested Sunset Parts as a supplier.
The reply I received from Sunset was:
"I have two shown, the automatic style that goes up and down with the cab top. You would have a zipper arrangement sewn into the cab top for
the one to work. This one is 379.50 plus shipping. If you don't have the auto style, you would need the one for 363.81 that you operate manually.
I reviewed the Topic: "What's the zipper for inside of the 993 Cab?" but I am still unsure as to the difference between automatic vs. the manual windstop. I am a big fan of anything that can be described as "automatic" though I do not understand how it is applied in this instance.
Any insight into this matter would be greatly appreciated.
My cab came with the factory windstop, which I think is the one Sunset refers to as "automatic" (I never put it in as it looks pretty ugly though). When the top is up, the windstop rotates up and sits flush against the top - you don't even realize that you have one unless you look up at the roof. When you lower the top, the windstop rotates down behind the seat. The brakets on the side of the top mechanism on my car are not identical - one side has fittings which are responsible for the automatic deployment of the windstop.
There is one side of a zipper that is attached to my headliner - the windstop has material at the trailing edge which zips to the headliner. When the top is down, these zipped portions act as sort of a canopy.
I'm unfamiliar with the manual version of the windstop; perhaps the zipper in the headliner is only in cars that were delivered with the windstop from the factory.
Hmmm. I have a zipper in my headliner but the car never had a factory windstop to my knowledge. (I am the second owner.) I looked for the windstop in the Shop Manual and I found only the manual version.
David, you do not happen to have a photo of your version by any chance?
The factory only provide one windstop that is "automatic" as David describes. I have the factory one that I installed as it did not come with the car. Even before I had the windstop the Cab had a zipper in the headliner.
All our cars come with the zipper in the headliner. The option is wether or not you buy the windstop and put the zipper to use.
I've never seen a 'manual' windstop for our cars. The Porsche literature certainly doesn't describe one (the Tequipment book). I'm a big fan of the windstop - try it, you'll like it (as the commercial used to say).
I have often contemplated purchasing the windstop but As I installed a roll bar for my drivers ed fun concerned that the windstop will not fit , anyone have experience with both windstops and rollbars ???
thanks
David, Mo, Tom,
Thank you for clearing up this issue for me.
I now realize that the Windstop I saw in the shop manual was actually the auto version. It has been ordered and will soon be on the way.
I am sure my "Navigator" will appreciate it.
Got my windstop installed tonight. Hooray!
It may only be a 1 out of a scale of ten for a DIY, but it is in and it works. (And I did not wreck, scatch or tear anything else in the process.) David in LA - It works exactly as you described!
Cris,
Sunset Parts sold the OEM Wind Stop for $379.50 plus $22 shipping.
I got their name from an earlier post by another Chris C from Atlanta. Their website is - http://www.sunsetimports.com/hours.htm.
I received the item less than 2 weeks after I ordered it.
Sorry, I mis-typed that shortcut.
It should have read:
