Default differential noise was tiptronic noise

The differential ? of my 993 '97 tiptronic (less than 50,000km) makes a noise "klonk" when I engage "R" or "D" The same happens when I go from decelerating to acelerating or the other way around. It feels like there is play in the differential that is taken when the when changing from "the wheels pushing the car to the car pushing the wheels" When accelerating through the gears the gear changes are very smooth and no strange sounds are heard. Any ideas?

Thanks, Henk Schoenmaker

Hi Henk:

Certainly these kinds of things require a professional to test and evaluate to make a final diagnosis, but I'd offer that unless its pretty noisy or pronounced, that sound is kinda normal.

If you can feel & hear a distinct "klonk" when you get on and off the throttle, that might either be a pinion bearing problem or a torque convert issue.

Time for a look inside,......
