I recently bought my 1996 Turbo, and my son & I took it on an inaugural road trip to Northern Arizona. 1400 miles. We saw:

1 boxster
1 ratty C4 Corvette
1 1st gen Rx7
78657 pickups

We are really spoiled.

This is a funny post. Here in GA the P-car population is much lighter than CA or FL. I travel 1 hour each way to and from work and see at most 2-3 P cars of any type/year. Mostly 996 and Boxters, some 944's and very few 993 or earlier 911's.
On a nice weekend day I do see more older cabs, I guess most of the older ones are weekend cars like mine and due to the poor weather most p car drivers have other daily drivers. And we aren't as bad of posers as CA drivers...

I seem to remember reading that there are more Porsche's in California than the rest of the world combined. Could that be possible?

You guys are lucky, here in Ohio you might see 10-12 a year. Mine being one and my mechan ics the other, they are a pretty rare breed around these parts. Probably has something to do with all the ^(&^(%^^^ pot holes!!

Turning to the Detroit suburbs (my commute was Oakland Township to Troy on I75) I think I saw 2-3 other Porsches on my daily commute in the whole of 2002!!!!!!!

In the hour it took to go the next 6 miles, I observed the following P-cars:

4- 1984-1989 Carreras
3- 964
3- 993
5- boxsters
30- 996
1- 928
1- 924
1- 944 cab

What does this all mean? Nothing. Although seeing all these great cars makes me want to drive the P-car as well, I am thankful I have a daily driver so I do not have to drive my P-car in the rain.

I think he just passed a Porsche dealer and counted all the cars on the lot

Actually, I think one in four families own a Porsche product here in socal. Otherwise you get a ticket.

I live in Los Gatos, CA. Every Saturday I walk down the street the the local coffee shop and hang out drinking coffee, eating bagels, and shooting the ****.

Over a period of one summer I counted:

1 300SL gull wing coupe. (regularly driven I see it a lot)
3 Lamborghini Diablos
4 Ferrari 355
2 Ferrari Daytona
2 Ferrari 246 GTS/GT
3 Aston Martin Vanquishes
1 Aston Martin DB4
3 Ferrari 360 Modena's
1 Shelby Cobra the new one being made in LA somewhere
4 Ferrari 550 Maranello's
1 Lamborgini Countach
3 Lamborghini Murcielago's
2 Ferrari Testarossas
Bunch of Shelby Cobra's
Lots of 996
Quite a few 993s
Tons of Boxturds

That's all I can remember. I was sort of keeping track because I have never seen some of these exotic cars actually being driven around. It's quite a site seeing some of these cars going down the street.

Olav,

Yeah, funny! I live in an LA Suburb (about 40 min north) and if I ever have to do any business in BevHills, WestLA, or Century City, P-car sightings are downright common....and that's on any given DAY. For that matter, Astons, Ferraris (yes, plural) and an occational Lambo also is commonplace. And don't get me started about all those S55, AMG, M5 blah blah blah sightings, either. I feel like I arrived on another planet. Still, I enjoy the view!

I think the rough rule of thumb is 50% of PAG production goes to the US. 50% of that goes to California, being heavily skewed to SoCal.

We tend to get everything last, but we get it cheaper. Just ask our allies, the Brits.

Is it true that the Californians that drive older Porsches do it so they can save up for furniture?.

True story- about 25 years ago we were out in LA visiting our inlaws when an actor friend of his showed up in a 911 wearing a Rolex. In the chit chat that followed he mentioned that he and his girlfriend were tired of washing dishes, but dishwashers are expensive. A man with his priorites!

Porsches?..........we don't need no stinkin' Porsches!

I picked up a new Porsche during the PCA Treffen trip to Stuttgart in 1983. The group spent a week traveling down thru northern Italy to Monte Carlo before returning our cars to Stuttgart for shipment home. My brother and I were the first of our group to arrive in Monte Carlo at our hotel, the Loewe's Casino (the hotel with the tunnel on the backside that the F1 cars roar thru).

The hotel has parking out front under the marquee for about 6 or 8 cars. We pulled up and proudly paked my new pride and joy front row center. We were then told by a very preturbed bell captain that the Porsche's were to be parked below in the underground garage - ie: out of site!

We grudgingly complied. When we came out later that evening, what do we find but all the spaces under the marquee taken by Ferrari's and Rolls Royce's. I guess if you must drive a trashy new Porsche in Monte Carlo, you'd better know your place.

Cheers,

Fred R.

Yeah...I was feeling smug a couple of months ago, driving around in my shiny 993...turned the corner and had 2 Diablos and a 550 grabbing some sushi. Still felt happy...just not as smug

And yes, I just recently read the 50% to US, 50% of that to Cali, probably 75% of that to SoCal (last part is a guess).

Crazy. Women come with built in airbags now too

Asking all you SoCal P-car owners, do any of you belong to the SGV PCA? Trying to get some info but the website is lousy and out of date and have not heard back from the membership person. If not, which chapter do you belong to as I am looking forward to joining a group where I can hang out with other P-car owners.
