Default Door strap design examples

Having just noticed that the metal door check strap which enters the A pillar is begining to show signs of the dreaded door check strap spot weld failure - I felt it would be good to share other solutions on lesser cars with longer design lives.

The blue example is a Peugeot 307 diesel 2.0litre , the red one is a Vauxhall Nova 1400cc small hatchback. The silver version is from a Renault Megane 1600cc hatchback. My guess is that these will last the life of the car.

My check strap welds are failing at 34000 miles, three weeks after a service at the Porsche dealer Guildford Surrey costing £570 for little more than an oil and filter change.

Perhaps the 996 and 997 have better designs. (if not - Porsche please study these pictures for future reference!)

As it is I seem to remember door straps used to be of cloth or leather and last considerably more than 34000 miles.

Goods in the UK have to be "fit for purpose" under the consumer protection laws.

Porsche 993 door strap design clearly isnt.

The door strap problem is a pain, but with the right tech doing the wielding it can be an easy and clean job. I was very pleased with mine.

Chuck, many thanks for the photo - worth a thousand words! I'll print it and give it to whoever I find to do the fix.

John, Not a problem. I have seen some poor jobs out there. A good tech can make it look like it came from the factory.
