Cool Steve Weiner Special (AKA Chip on a 1995 993) Review

Just as great as the recent suspension upgrade, I installed a Steve Weiner Special (tm) over the weekend and this simple swap has transformed my daily driving experience. Read on...

The swap is simple, just follow the DIY instructions on p-car.com - but REMEMBER TO INSTALL THE WAFER (GREEN) THAT THE CHIP IS SHIPPED ON! If you don't, the car won't start, and you'll have to call Steve on a weekend and bother him with the details about how you really are a computer engineer, but...just...can't...seem...to...make...things...work...

Once the car starts, the change is subtle, or at least it was in my case. This upgrade alone isn't going to slam you into the back of your seat, tear your hairplugs out through the sunroof, or give you a 3G facelift. In my car, the most pronounced effect is that the engine runs considerably smoother than before. There's far less of a "peaky" character to power curve, and I can now detect only one significant change in throttle response, which conincides with the engine coming "on-cam", or so I tell myself....

The end result is that the engine is much, much, much, much, much (ad infinitum) eaiser to live with in day-to-day commute-type driving. The power comes on earlier, and is flatter througout the rev range. Which means I can cruise Westheimer in 3rd gear all the way from the office home, if I can avoid the lights!

As far as the butt dyno goes, I'm not sure about increases in peak output - but what the chip no doubt does do is yield more USEABLE horsepower.

I'm sure sold, thanks a million Steve!

Good job Sean,

I did a dyno run & have the chart for this same exact GIAC chip, so here ya go if you want to know what your power curve looks like:

Forum post with dyno chart click here

Its a great product. I am about to dyno another version set for peak power. I will post that chart too after I complete the run.

Michael,
What information do you have that makes you think this GIAC chip from Imagine Auto is the same chip as Steve's?

Tom,

What information do I have? Excellent question.

Well, how about the fact that Steve/Rennsport is a GIAC dealer just like ImagineAuto, and the fact that the chip Sean used is a GIAC chip.

That may do it.

Nothing wrong with that. GIAC is the best chip.

No one is hiding the fact that Steve sells GIAC chips. Its not a secret or anything. You dont need any special "information" to know that. Did you think he made them by himself in his lab?

That would be cool.

Steve was extremely helpful in setting up the performance parameters w/ GIAC for sure. Makes for a great product.

Let me make something clear, I just used the chip Steve sent me - I have no knowledge of whether or not it is made by GIAC.

Even if it is, I gladly ponyed up the extra $$ for Steve's reputation and customer support.

Yes, as a matter of fact I did think that Steve made them in his own lab. I even spoke with him about the details of the map, and he gave no indication that he didn’t make them in his own lab. In fact, I got the distinct impression that he did make them.

If this fact that Steve is a dealer for GIAC is not a secret, it’s not very public. There is nothing on his web site (that I could find) indicating he’s a GIAC dealer, and he certainly does not volunteer that information over the phone.

Did he tell you that he’s a GIAC dealer? How do you know he is?

Steve, any comments?

Tom,

No problem, glad to help. Go to: http://www.giacusa.com/ for dealer list. Or just look at the GIAC ad in Excellence. No secret.

I think its honorable when any of the Rennlist circle buys from any vendor related to this fine forum. That's one thing that makes this community great.

BTW, I am trying to be a super helper here too. After all, I did the chip dyno run, and the performance test, and then posted it for all of us to marvel (or not marvel). I don't think anyone else had ever posted straight up "before & after" dyno charts for such an hot talked about topic for 993 owners in the past. Additionally I have about 800 post, and I try to be helpful with them too... Okay, not with all of them

Anyhow, enjoy your new found power! That is what its all about.

Well, I never thought that Steve had a chip foundry in the back of his shop, and makes his own lithographs in a clean room! But isn't the point the customization that's done by the tuner - the fuel/air/timing maps - and downloaded into the chip?

Or am I wrong here, and all GIAC chips are cookie-cutter duplicates with no option for customization?

Robert,

Great Q's.

There are several choices when it comes to the GIAC line up of 993 chips. If you were to give me your "set up" list, we can choose which parameters to enter onto the chip and send out to you. Most of the popular parameters are pre done.

If you then asked for a change, that can be entered onto a chip as well.

I had some forum members ask for more "peak power" over my 1st posted dyno chart, so I am going to dyno another version that could suit them. Simple as that.

So, yes. You want custom. We got it.

I've read probably every post of Rennlist archive covering or even slightly touching the "performance chip" topic. Almost half of those threads mention Steve W name. After reading them I built strong impression that Steve is "programing guru" (actually I borrowed this term from on of the messages there).
It is now really strange to hear now that Steve is one of the dealers of other shop which manufactures the performance chips.
I will really miss that Steve ...Steve who has lived in my imagination only for so long !

p.s. Please don't tell me Gert doesn't exists! Leave me a little hope!

Thanks again, Michael

And thanks for your before and after dyno charts, as well. As I have one of “Steve’s” chips, that was very informative for me.

I don’t have a problem having bought the chip from Steve, as both his customer service and his contributions to this board are excellent. I also don’t have a problem paying full price, as I’m not a member and don’t get that discount.

Like everyone on this board, I’m a bit of a car fanatic and just want to know all the details!

Sorry to be asking Michael, but... I do not see imagine auto being a dealer of the chip?
On the link you have on your dyno post it certainly does not say who is the chip made from.
Sorry I'm confused...

Sure it does Danny. Read again.

Check near the bottom of post number 1 in the thread, you will see this:

"Who produces this fine product? It is a GIAC production brought to you by ImagineAuto through EVO Motorsports..."

Hey all. I am feeling like Geraldo Rivera uncovering the Capone vault... Anyone remember that?

ImagineAuto and EVO Motorsports,
Pretty good company I would say!
One makes super Turbos amongst other things and the other is a well know motorsport enity. If I did not have a chip, I would trust these guys with my performace upgrade.
By the way Geraldo got the wrong vault. The real vault is in my neighborhood. Grand Ave is a well known 20's Mob hangout.

For what its worth, I did get my 993 ECU remapped by Steve and he sent it back with some GIAC stickers, so obviously he is a GIAC dealer.

By the way, my experience with the chip has been good. The HP curve is flatter, the throttle response is better, and there is a noticeable (albeit small) bump in power in the upper rev ranges.
