Hi:
First, I will tell you that you are at the rev limiter at 6750 and you oughta shift before you hit that. Its much easier on the engine.
Lastly, you are well past peak HP and torque at or near the rev limiter and I'd suggest shifting at 6400-6500 for max performance when you need it.
Normally speaking, I'd suggest a shift at 5500 or so when in Manual.
Enjoy!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the "smart" chip in the Tiptronic will let you rev that high or let you over rev the engine...manual mode or not.

The other day I managed to reach 6500ish in my tip. There were cars ahead that stopped me going higher to test that theory. I think it probably would have let me reach 7000ish.

The maximum permissible engine rpm is unrelated to the transmission. It's 6700 rpm in my '96 993 (per my owner's manual) - 6 speed manual or 4 speed tip.

Seve,
Dan is absolutely correct 6700rpm manual or tiptronic, even the turbo is pretty close at 6720rpm. Either your tach is over optimistic or your limiter is not operating correctly. If it is the latter you should get this checked as you are exceeding the maximum permissible engine rpm .

Your dad probably has the "don't trust my son" switch activated.
Seriously, the tip may be smarter than you think - by 6000 rpm you're leaving the engine's power band.

My Dad? Not trust me? Why I've never more than lightly damaged a Porsche on a couple - err, several - occasions, he wouldn't be worried about me, would he?
What you say about shifting short of the 6700 rpm redline being faster is true in cars with more closely spaced gears. With the stock 6 speed 993, in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears it is theoretically faster to shift up before 6700 rpm - though not by much at all. The benefit of short shifting would be more apparent with a 993 equipped with the RS 6 speed transmission, since its gearing is more closely spaced. If I had the gear ratios of the RS, I could run the calculations to get a better idea.
In a Tiptronic equipped 993, with only 4 forward gears, it is definitely not faster to shift up to the next gear before 6700 rpm. The gears are so widely spaced that there is a big drop in drive power to the rear wheels with each upshift even when you take the previous gear to redline.
So getting cheated out of a few hundred rpm at the top end by my Dad's Tiptronic really is significant!
