Post Litronic Headlamp Interchange 95/96-97/98

Can you interchange a 95/96 Litronic headlamp assy with a 97/98 Litronic headlamp assy without causing problems? The part numbers for the 95/96 Litronic headlamp assy and the control module are different than those listed for the 97/98 parts. Do you have to keep the headlamp assembly and control module matched up by year? Also the costs are significantly different, what is the difference in the parts between the years?
Thanks
Jack

The actual lights and modules should be the same.
However, the wiring could be different between the years, as they use different pins on the headlamp connectors. I thought this was only for cars with electric beam levelling though.

Can't help on price (I'm in the uk) but would be surprised if they are significantly different.

Bottom line is, if you are retrofitting these you should be able to fit either, as it will require loom mods anyway. If you are replacing a broken one, then I guess it would be safer to get the right one, unless the dealer has both in stock and would allow you to comparethem ?

Cheers,
John.

Err, just had a thought.
The 97/98 part numbers you were given were for the 993 and not the 996, weren't they...

Sounds silly, but just checking.

Cheers,
John.

Are there separate RHD/LHD parts for litronic lights or is the unit adjustable for both?

John

The part # for the 95/96R headlamp is 993.631.052.01 ($1154) and for the 97/98 is 993.631.052.02 ($943) The part # for the control module for the 96 is 993.631.093 and for the 97 is 993.631.093.02. I just bought a set with the 97 part numbers and they are for the 993. The wiring instructions I got from the Porsche dealer didn't differentiate between years.
Just want to make sure I don't blow something up by using a 97 headlamp assy with a 96 control module.

Thanks

Jack,
I don't think you will do any harm, but if I were you I would try to buzz out the loom with reference to the wiring loom, just to make sure.

If you have a copy of the wiring diagrams you will see the pin numbers change at the headlight.
I am pretty sure they never change at the control module end though.

Bear in mind that the headlight unit contains the ballast, so you should check that this has only 1 part number, or if not matches the ignitor module.

I would check for you, but I managed to break my lap-top at home recently, so can't access the parts list at present.

Sorry, I have not taken the ballast or ignitor apart, so cannot say if they are 100% exactly the same in electrical terms.
I can tell you that the rest of the headlight unit definitely is though.

Ken, there are different headlamp units for different parts of the world. Our rhd (left hand traffic) lights have a lever in them which cuts the beam pattern to a flat level beam (i.e. no longer raised to the left) for driving in mainland Europe. US lights do not have this.

A lot has been written about this in the past, so best to do a search. Basically, if you want to fit HIDs in the uk you need to try to source light units from Hong Kong/Japan, or get some lhd units and modify them.
IMO the better route is to install a kit from the likes of Autolamps (in the uk). They give the same light performance for considerably less money.

Regards,
John.
P.S. if you want to know a bit more, mail me direct. There is a small group discount set up with the above mentioned company, so if you want the password give me a mail.

John,
The ballast in the headlight for 96 has part # 993.631.923.00 and for 97 part # 993.631.925.00. So it looks like they may be different parts. I think I'll just keep all the parts matched up to the 97 specs and not take a chance of messing anything up by interchanging parts from different years.
Thanks for your inputs.
