I recently swapped my oem G50/20 tranny for a used G50/21 (w/LSD) from Gert & installed Viperbob's LWF/RS clutch kit. You'll be thrilled w/the transformation of the car.

I sold my stock G50/20 in under a week for my asking price to a guy in the UK building a kit car. The buyer had a friend who was also looking for a G50/20 for a similar project. If you're interested in selling your G50/20, send me an email/PM & I'll get you the contact info.

BTW, when the dust cleared, my entire project (parts & professional labor) cost about $4k.

Just think, eventually, when we all have regeared our gearboxes, we can pool our 6th gears, weld them together as mailbox stands...

you've seen them before, out in the country there is always some creatively welded together tractor parts that mounts their mailboxes

I thought that was just an East Coast thing. My neighbor has a multicolored crankshaft for the mailbox post. Maybe he markets them to the West Coast crowd.

This board is cool, but it has lots of real disadvantages. Just wanted to inform about installing shorter gearing, and, of course, some smart alecs mention the LWF (which I really did not intend to install), but now realize, after sleeping on it, that it would be silly not to... Oh well, guess it really isn't a mod anyway, but simply another "adjustment" (after all the old 911's did have it...). Am sure old Ferdinand would approve... OK, am going for it.... If I don't am danged sure I'll regret it...

(All of a sudden, am having doubts as to the difference between my new "adjustments" and my old "mods" to be honest thought... )

All I can say is

Gear..US/Swiss......Rest of the World ......Steve's Recommendation
______(G50/20)________(G50/21)__________
1.......3.818..................3.818...................3.818
2.......2.048..................2.150....................2.25
3.......1.407..................1.560....................1.68
4.......1.118..................1.242....................1.3
5....... 0.962.................1.027....................1.1
6........0.775.................0.820....................0.962

P.S. For 4WD substitute G64 for G50, otherwise the same

As this thread progresses, you are bordering on talking mods - maintain the high ground and stick with your original story. Hey, maybe you don't even want to do this; it is just that you are compelled to in order to make the car what it was originally meant to be. Sort of allowing the car to be true to its breeding. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Joe,
You are right on target. Making the car the way Ferdinand Porsche meant it to be. (this also means no chrome wheels, btw...)

Phil, are you not doing the autobahns ?? Steve's gears look OK for US and track, but I think they'd be 'busy' on the a-bahn .....

cheers, Maurice

Maurice,
I do German autobahns maybe once a year. The Swiss and Italian autobahns have speed limits. I do mostly mountain passes. This is the ideal solution for me... Plus the acceleration factor!

FWIW

As a person who regeared his 993 (3-6 gears) let me offer a little advice. Why not keep your 6th gear as 6th? When do you actually use 6th gear? Probably on the highway just cruising along. Leaving 6th alone allows a low revving cruising gear for the highway. Second, you ought to consider steel Porsche Motorsports synchros for 3-5. They engage smoother and will last much longer than the brass street synchros. The difference between brass and steel was about $50-75 each. Trust me, this additional cost is peanuts in your overall program.

I chose a set of gears very close to the Clubsport gearing. My 6th was a tad shorter than the stock 5th. Trust me, I really missed that low revving cruise gear. This is the only thing I would have done differently. For all the details, do a search on my name.

Cheers,

Fred,
Steve is sending me Motorsport steel syncros for 2nd-5th. I was considering keeping 6th gear as is. Is this possible?

Actually, I think I can answer my own question: yes. (the rpm drop will be bigger from 5th to 6th but who cares...) And I keep the same max speed! (have my cake and eat it too)

Phil,

Keeping 6th just as it is, is precisely what I recommend. This will leave you with a nice cruising gear for the highway. My mechanic provided me a new brass synchro for 6th at no charge. Considering the the project cost this was peanuts. I was unable to change 2nd gear as is was fixed to the shaft along with 1rst. It would have cost another $1500 to change 2nd. The most important gear to change is 3rd. Currently there is to big of a gap between 2nd and 3rd. Once you bring 3rd down and respace 4 and 5, you should be able to accelerate aggressively thru the gears. I also did the LWF at the time the box was out. It only added to the parts cost as the labor was not significantly affected. These changes transformed the car. My only regret was loosing the nice cruising gear.

Cheers,

Fred,
Thanks for your advice. I am pretty sure that I will have to change the shaft also, since I do want to change 2nd as well. I had done this change on my old car and actually did not notice the difference in 6th so much, since the difference between the 6th for the 20 and 21 variants is not so much. But in this case use the old 5th, it would be surely noticeable. Will follow your recommendation and keep the 6th as is. Will probably go for the LWF as well.
Regards.

I spoke to Steve and will continue as he suggested: keep the current 5th as 6th to so as to avoid to big a rev difference.
Steve is very knowledgeable, and I recommend anybody considering this modification to contact Steve for advice.
