Let's Face It
I love porsches, not too comfortable with the attention the cars get at times when driving around or talking to people at work, but I do love going to the track at a PCA event and hanging out/driving with other Porsche folks on the track. For me it's more about Porsches, I'd rather be around other Porsches than just driving down the road for attention, it's more about driving the car and the thrill I GET from DRIVING THE CAR, not just standing around and striking a pose.
Any chance to tell this story.
Earlier this summer I was at the gas station just outside the gate at BIR in my race car. A very attractive blonde in a BMW convertible was filling up at the pump next to me. She starting chatting it up asking all kinds of questions about my car, the track, etc. I'm pretty sure I was being very cool when I climbed in my car and fired it up. She looked very impressed. I'm sure she was even more impressed when, while still looking at her and yelling some last second niceties, I let out the clutch, looked forward and realized I was heading for the building with my steering wheel still laying on the dash. Some of us just shouldn't get that kind of attention. We could hurt someone.

When I first got my PCar, I remember driving a buddy around town. When we were stopped at a red light, he just exclaims "son of a bitch, it works..". I of course, am baffled as to the comment, as were weren't having a conversation. "What do you mean?" I said.
"The chicks, they actually check you out in this car.."
"They never look when I'm in a cab..."
Enough said.

Jim,
That was classic. You are clearly a member of HWFMR in the truest form
I fell in love with the 911 in 1973 when I was 9 years old. Back then, I could care less about that kind of attention. Actually, back then girls had kooties and I did not want their attention. Now I am happily married in a town where Porsches are a dime a dozen. Don't really need the attention, although my wife loves the car so I guess that is good attention

In London, especially in Kensington, you don't get much attention, there are lots and lots of p-cars most of which are newer than ours, 996 Turbos, 996 GT-3s, 996 GT-2s, etc. Not to mention the Farraris, Bentleys and Lamborghinis, etc. But when you get out of London, to smaller towns and cities, you do get noticed, and I like it!

For me, the best part of driving the 993 on the road and any associated attention was the speed with which people in the left lane (usually) got out of the way.
My car, while still street legal, has so many stickers on it that it's very out of place and kind of embarrassing. I know, I know, why be embarrassed? In it's current form, it just draws too much focus on me, especially when you're sitting at a light, looking like you lost your way to Watkins Glen.

We had a blue/blue/blue Boxster for a while along with the 993s.
We got far more attention and friendly smiles with the 986. It just seemed to make peoiple happy. There's always a bit of an undercurrent of resentment to the most resent 911s, probably because they are expensive (plus all the ricers want to race), but our cars are quickly becoming classics, like the 356s.

OK... I personally hate the attention.....
I left the Cab in the driveway the other day and took the kids to the swimming pool to cool off. About 30 minute into it I hear the 17 year old boys in the parking lot cat calling to a car driving by.... YUP!!! My wife decided to take the car out for a spin!
SO ... What was my response......... GOTTA LOVE IT!
