Let's Face It
Just curious if I am in the minority.
I (and I think most) buy these p-cars (most notably the 993 variety) because of the visceral feelings, gorgeous lines, exhilarating performance, their racing lineage, the incredible heritage, the marquee, etc. But just like there are some guys that admit that they aren't "Masters of Their Own Domain" and the the rest are liars (Seinfeld reference), I wonder if we don't drive these car because they attract attention. Let's admit, we feel special (and we should: we have both great taste but more importantly, are most fortunate to be able to afford) and it feeds our ego. Porsches make a statement and those who drive them are an extension of that expression. Off the record, I am curious if, in fact I am in the minority, because sometimes I feel self conscience driving. But self aware or not, I love it! |
You're right. I wonder how many on this list will admit they love the attention their car's attract.
|
I don't know...we happen to love and appreciate the heritage of these cars. Personally, if I were driving for the attention factor, I'd be in a Ferrari or Viper or even....dare I say.....corvette.
|
I'm not saying we buy for the attention factor, but nonetheless, it's something we enjoy.

HAHA
I just bought a Speed Yellow C4... I used to drive a 1981 BMW, so the attention is new to me... and I will admit that I like it. Earlier today four lovely young ladies driving beside me on the Interstate waved at me for a good mile... and starting taking pictures (HAHA)... I like it <smile>.

I don't pertickerlry like the attention. I'm 53 and I've had 7 911s in the last 30 years......I do like the cars.
I remember setting at a red light not to far from my house near the local university. I heard these female voices yelling HAY,HAY....HAY, I just kept looking straight ahead, they kept yelling. Finally, I pushed the passengers side window switch down and looked to my right there were two very attrictive young blonds in a new BMW convertible. I calmly smiled and said, "can you cook?"...... they looked confused and I drove away. BTW I'm one of those happily married types :) . |

P.S. Being human, I like situations like these: My neighbors have large a BMW SUV and a small MB SL coupe. The wife told me (before I went back to 993s), referring to my Cooper, "Oh what a cute, little car...". I smiled politely, grating my teeth. "Cute, little car"? My male hormones hated that... :banghead:
The other day, she saw me pull out with my C4S, and was speechless. The expression on her face was priceless. :roflmao: Yes, I know childish on my part, but heck I am only human... :p |
I must admit that I didn't anticipate the amount of attention that our cars can generate. I just wanted to own one for the pure driving experience like everyone else on this board. However, I've fully enjoyed every thumbs up I get from other drivers, I like the fact that the neighborhood kids like to ask me about my car, I've met great people in parking lots who've commented on my car or have questions, etc.
I like everything about owning a 993. chuck |
In L.A. you don't get much of any attention in a Porsche (unless it's a new C-GT, GT2, GT3), even less in a 993. This IMHO is a good thing, you can enjoy the car without having to worry about it attracting the wrong attention.

There is no doubt that any car enthusiast loves the attention they receive whenever they drive, its not just with the P-car crowd. It gives us a feeling that we have great taste :p But as car enthusiasts we also know the real reason we buy certain cars is for the heritage and performance.

The other day, she saw me pull out with my C4S, and was speechless. The expression on her face was priceless. ...." It was similar with my standard Polar Silver C2, eliciting frequent "cute" comments from female work colleagues and friends. After I lowered it, fitted RSR`s, 18" wheels, RS side skirts and GT2 front and rear spoilers the comments were quite different, ranging from "awesome" to "mean-looking". My favourite however was a large breasted Swiss girl of about 28 wearing a USA flag T-short that got out of a LandRover at a petrol station. She walked around it twice and said "that is one sexy car..." Sexy or cute - what would you rather drive? (or be? ) Regards Mike |
What a great thread! I personally am not used to the attention it illicits, but am not complaining.. However, in high pedestrian areas (ie. bus stop, crosswalk (many wait to cross as I live in NYC)), I sometimes feel like i'm in a fishbowl as others have described. For me, I went from one end of the spectrum, picking the car up in West coast where no one blinks an eye @ a 993 to the East coast, where 993s are so rare that ppl are not sure whether it's the "new" 911 or an old one.
Nonetheless, the joy of owning one of these beauties are the heritage, performance, curves, with a little attention factor thrown in. :) |
Me??? Love the attention??? Nah....... :D
I don't mind the attention but Robert worries about it sometimes when I leave the house with the top down on the 993. We live in an area where any type of German Car is rare, and it's twice as rare if it's a German Sports Car and three times as such if there's a Female Driving it!!!! I don't mind the "He Man" types flapping their jaws at me at me as long as they keep their chaw in thier mouth's and their trucks off of my tail !!!! Seriously, I didn't get my Porsche just to attract attention. I got my Porsche because I love Porsche's. PERIOD. JoAnne |
Me too JoAnne. (Just happen not to mind the attention - but that is solely a byproduct)
Mike, Cool down. Suggest you go to the Off Topic section and look at the Grid Girls thread to cool off.. ooops, no maybe in second thoughts, maybe better not... :icon501: |
