latest find
I had almost given up on a nice 993 that I could afford, and had soured on the 3.2 cars I was finding (and remembered one of my issues with those cars...creature comforts). I was about ready to pick up a used BMW M Coupe, but I may have found a viable 993. It is a '97 lease return w/65K miles on it (bought in '96, one owner). Stone stock and clean, but it feels like it will need a new clutch soon. I can get it for not much more than the payoff to the bank (the dealer was going to send it off to auction). They can probably dig up records (electronic at other dealers), and will let me do a PPI at my shop. Price will be in the mid $30's.
I'm thinking this might be a good one to pursue...

Sounds like a winner unless a shop soaks you for a $10,000 clutch.
I assume this IS a '96? if so, very good if the PPI comes out OK.
(mid $30K for a '96 993??? Is the economy that far in the dumps?)

If the car checks out, even without being in excellent condition and the high mileage, mid 30s is a great deal. Get the PPI and check for body damage. If it checks out, jump on it for that price.
Hey Mark,
I'm waiting for jimbo to make up my mind for me
Actually on the advice of people here and elsewhere, I'm attempting to look at as many cars as possible and enjoy the process. I'm getting close, but there is no perfect car for me...between my two top choices (993 and M coupe) there are pluses and minuses to both. At least my recent drives in 3.2 cars led me to the conclusion that it isn't quite what I'm looking for...ie I didn't fall in love.
I'd like to recreate the experience I had with my Zon 5-string Lightwave fretless bass. I picked it up and couldn't put it down. Still can't after almost 2 years. While I realize I have to put more objective work into the fun car purchase (ppi, etc), I'm still looking for that "wow" feeling when I drop the clutch in a car that I can also afford to live with.
