Post Is a K&N Cone filter OK?

Is a K&N cone filter ok or is the stock filter box acceptable enough. Or, are there more suitable options for better breathing?

I would appreciate knowing what most of you have done.

Thanks in advance.

Before you buy the K&N Filter, check out these threads:

Brad,

Check the archives on this one. You'll find that those "in the know" have found no power benefit to the K&N cone filter, and I think I even recall a few saying it reduced power. If you want better sound, drill the airbox (lots in archives on this) and/or change the exhaust. If you want cheap power, it doesn't exist.

The reason I ask is that a car I am looking at purchasing has a cone filter in it already and I wonder if this is a good thing or not. I doubt the original airbox is available.

What would be the cost of getting a used replacement? I see that upgraded filters and covers can vary between $120 AND $200. But that doesnt include the base box.

Brad,

Hmmm, a used airbox base might be a tough one to find. Have you looked in Pano? I know Parts Heaven and (I think) L.A.Porsche Dismantlers advertise there. If you're serious about the car and the PPI and all else looks good, you might want to call a dealer and get the price of a full box and filter, then use that as a bargaining $$ tool. If the car is from a dealer, have them replace it. Good luck.

I used to hear that with the K&N cone sometimes it creates turbulent airflow and that results in a check engine light with the 993 engines. Not sure about this personally, since I use the BMC flat filter.

Along the same lines, is it ok to use the K&N cleaning kit on the BMC paper element. I have a kit leftover from the M car cone filter. Otherwise I will try and locate a BMC cleaning kit.

Thanks,
Sam

Brad:

You'll be lots better off if you put the Factory airbox on this car and simply add more airholes to the cover.

The Factory airbox makes more power than any cone filter on the 993.

Cool

IMHO, keep it stock (or factory approved). Aftermarket parts are for rice burners.

Try Oklahoma Foreign car parts for a used factory airbox http://www.oklahomaforeign.com I've had good results with their parts.

Good luck!

Good news! The dealer will supply factory airbox and new filter.

Thanks for your suggestions. I would not have insisted without your input.
