Got a dreaded "check engine light" on my instrument cluster. I am not certain if anyone has asked this question and I apologize if I am about to repeat it but...Any clues why I got it?
Well Pat,...
The main reason for the CE lamp is to inform you about a condtion that is out-of-tolerance. This is most likely emissions-related but it can be other things, as well.
The ONLY way you'll know what triggered the lamp is to use the Porsche scan tools (Hammer or PST-2) and see the code that turned the lamp on. There are several OBDII conditions that will light the CE lamp when it repeats itself without resolution.
Its time to find a shop with the Hammer or PST-2 or visit the Dealer.
Wish I had better news.

Nevermind answering that. I just found MG993's question several post back.
I think I may may have a weak battery problem. Starting the car in the a.m. has been sounding rather anemic
. I will change my battery and hopefully that should fix the problem.
Unles of course someone else has another suggestion.

Hi Steve,
Read your reply, and have a question. I have the same Check Engine light problem with my '96 Targa.
My question is, "Do you mean that the OBDII may not be able to pinpoint the exact cause of the Check Engine light?" and that only the Porsche Scan tools (Hammer & PST-32) will be able to exactly pinpoint the problem?
My dealer who is using a OBDII to check my problem, told me that the air intake needs replacement.
BTW, what's better for a '96 993, 95 octane gas or 98 octane? Does it have any effect on Check engine light?
Thanks in advance,
John
