Brake Springs??
I have read p-car diy brake pad and decided to give it a try. I called Suncoast to order the parts and Phil says that his techs replace the brake springs. I see no mention of brake springs in the diy. Can someone fill me in?

each and every street Porcshe has little self adhesive "anti-vibration disks" that are suppossed to be replaced at each brake pad replacement. They are designed to absorb some vibration and squeal from the brake pads and rotor as they rub at differing pressures.
They are not mandatory for safety reasons just for sound/noise/vibration inhibition.
On street/track they are a waste as they are expensive and replaced too often as pads and brake rotor replacement would make one have to have a big bag of them all the time.
They are not used on Porsche racecars unless someone else knows better. I have never taken delievery of a new factory racecar some I dont know.....just assuming.
One another answer to reduce noise and make old racepads come out more easily......is to get Wurth anti squeal copper paste. You apply it to the back of the pads and then slip them in. Its great stuff, German made and works good and is inexpensive.
I havenet used those factory spring isolator plates for years as I use the Wurth brake paste. Reason, save big money over the springs/isolators and furthermore..... its a pain in the *** to simulatneously try to slide in big fat new brakepads while having the pistons back and then having to 1st preposition the "springs/isolators" in the piston bores after removing the adhesive sticker cover........ and then finally having the slide those big brake pads back in. Its completely doable but annoying. FYI- when you 1st hit the brake pedal the first time the springs self adhere stick to the back of the pads this elimnates some brake pads vibration and chatter. The paste does the same thing so to speak.
Have a great day

Don't know what they mean;
a) Doing work on the emergency brakes? Springs connect the two drum brake shoes and hold them in place.
b) Standard 4-wheel disc brakes? Only ones I can think of are the long springs/holder that hold the brake pads in the caliper.
See no reason for replacing any of these if all you're doing is changing brake pads.
Quiz Suncoast as to what they're talking about.

I called Phil at Suncoast and he says that Porche recomends replacing the retaining clips. This adds approx $100 for the four of them. Do you guys think this is needed. The p-car diy does not mention the need to replace.

Tom,
I have never heard of this before, nor have I read it anywhere. The only thing that "maybe" needs to be replaced are the caliper bolts, and only after if you have removed the calipers.
You can reuse the retainer springs over and over again without any problems.
Note: I just read the shop manual again and didn't see anything in there about replacing the cross spring (retainer spring), it only mention to be aware of the position of the flat position of the retainer when replacing a new one.
What a way to sell more parts.....

The retaining clips?? That is laughable. And $25 each is a rip off. I have never replaced them and I have changed brake pads a dozen times or more. My mechanic is very A.R. about stuff and this has never come up.

Now I'm wondering if I'm being overcharged as well. I have a 97 C4S with the big red aka turbo brakes and they are charging me $108 for the pair of front pads and $83 for the rear pair. If I want to use the sensors they want $19 for each front sensor and $16 for each rear sensor. Does this sound fair?
They said if I don't use any of the parts I can return them for a refund, so I am planning on getting these mystery "springs" and will post the parts #'s.
Do the pad prices seem good?
Thanks again!

I wasn't saying that Suncoast's prices were unfair, just Porsche's. The pad price seems good. Personally I wouldn't worry with the sensors but I have heard they are pricey for what they are.
Good luck,

Also I got new pads but I don't know which is the front and which are the rears.

Three Wheelin'
Send them back... I cant see why you would need to replace these parts... I have changed pads 3 times in the past year, and swapped track to street and back so many times I lost count. Never have I replaced clips or springs. I have the same brakes, Big Reds with the brake sensor wire removed (why? see above )

And regarding the sensor wires, if you are careful you can remove and reuse the existing ones. Use a small screwdriver to carefully pry them out.
The sensor wires are pretty pricey for what you get. For my TT, they are about $30 each. For cars without big reds, I think they are about $20 each.
If the brake sensors haven't triggered, then you can reuse the existing ones.

Thanks guys for the great responses! I bought the sensors just in case the old ones break. I will return the spings and clips and sensors if I'm able to reuse the old sensors.
