Post Track wheels

I am looking at buying a 2nd set of wheels for track days and setting them up with Dunlop R type street tyres or possibly slicks. One option I have is purchasing a second-hand set of turbo wheels. The other option, this is where I need some advice from you guys! What is on the market in the US?

You've got many options. If you purchase a second set of hollow turbo wheels, you can have those for about $1600 US without tires. You can get the solid spoke versions for less.

However, if I were you, I would NOT purchase a second set of hollow spoke turbo wheels. I would go with an aftermarket wheel that has a wider front width. The std hollow spoke technology wheels are only 8" width, which limits you to running a 225 or 235 tire.

I would buy an aftermarket wheel with an 8.5 or maybe even a 9" width. This will allow you to run at least a 245/35 tire, which will take out your understeer and make the car more balanced.

Yes, you can run a 245 on a 8" wheel, but it's not optimal. From what I've heard, it's definately stretching things a bit.

Some popular brands of rims are:

Fiske FM 10
Kinesis
BBS LM
HRE
Speedline

Also, there's some info in the archives about rims. In addition, you may want to look at 17" rims becuase the tires are a little cheaper than 18" tires.

Thanks Jeff. Are there any wheel websites to visit?

Kinesis, Fikse have web sites, BBS can be found on the web, Speedlines are the OEM wheel on the 993RS and 993RS CS. I have no clue as to where info on Speedlines is found.

Check out Wheel Enhancement in Culver City, CA.

As was mentioned above, you light to moderate track work, the 7" and 9" (X17") Cup Wheels will work well, and 17" tires are more plentiful, and less expensive.

Look at Tire Rack's web site. You will see that 18" racing tires are more expensive than 17". See http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/speedline/

If Speedline makes the 993RS wheel who is the manufacturer of the standard 17" 993 cup wheel?

I have checked the used wheel market for some time and have not been successful in getting what I need. I have ordered another set of BBS magnesiums with some advice from The Racers Group to get he proper offsets and size to handle as large a slick as will fit under a 993 narrow body. I have priced out new wheels from Fikse to Kinesis to BBS. They are all roughly the same +- $100 in the end for 18" wheels (depends on who you talk to with though).

Take your pick or if you are real lucky...oh I know someone here in San Diego who is selling some Kinesis wheels (18")for a TT. If interested send me an e-mail and I will hook you up.

You could possibly talk me out of my 18" Factory Turbo wheels for $1,600 + freight (To Australia?), possibly...unless I get a better offer. See my ad in Rennlist classifieds.

I think that shipping to australia would be very expensive. I did some quick calculations on the UPS web site and got a cost about $282 per wheel. Ouch!

But I guess if you gotta have them, then you gotta have them!

Wolf,
as a recent Ex-Pat from Australia let me pass on a little advice on a wheel to avoid. ANYTHING made by a ruthless butt plug by the name of Harry Witham!! Apart from the fact that him and his mate ripped me a new one with a 911 rebuild. I know too many people with his wheels that split or go out of shape. I don't even think he is liscensed to make wheels, he just does them by hand in his factory. A guy who lived up the street from me had one of his wheels colapse sitting at a traffic light. Could you imagine trashing down the freeway and have that happen? Any dealings with this bullsh*it merchant should be avoided at all costs and if he is around, I'd love to see him dispute it! I'd be surprised if he hasn't had a disgruntled customer take a bat to his knees yet?

FWIW, when I enquired 4-5 years ago, factory wheels from the dealer were AUD$900 or less each and that was when they were the latest style, surely now they have dropped in price?

Good Luck, beware the Witham.

Dylan.
