A very good alternative is TOMTOM GO, which has also a 3D view.
I usa actually a PDA navigator (Palm Tungsten T3 with TOMTOM navigator bluetooth) and I'm very happy with. This one is the cheapest way to have a navigator if you need also a PDA.

I've been using my laptop with a usb GPS receiver. Since I don't really look at the screen, and follow the spoken directions, it works great. The biggest advantage is that I have full maps for all 50 states, keyboard so I can type the address in quickly, and is extremely fast when it has to recalculate the route.

You guys are great and this is very helpful.
My next question is should i go with a more PDA version (such as the IQue) or the tomtom rather than the 2610.
Would the Ique have enough memory and are the features as good?

Hey I am a GPS systems engineer since the late 80's. If you need any help intergrating your GPS systems with intertial systems and into your weapons systems, should you carry them on board you993, and need to get weapons on targets let me know. I mostly work on fire and forget weapons but if your 993 weapons include man in the loop, I have some experience there too. If your 993 is unmanned I may be able to help or I'll get one of my collegues.

PDA+tomtom is cheaper than Ique, and the PDA (plam t3) has better performances.
With the TOMTOM you have a fantastic 3D view.

Look at the tomtom.com site...

Rob,
If the dead spots and GPS positioning is a problem, Garmin 2610 offers an external atenna that you can route into your dash or underneath the carpet and hide underneath the windshield, etc.

As far as the memory capacity, I loaded all of the westcoast from Mexico to Washington on my 2610. But keep in mind that more memory you have, the longer it takes to find addresses and plot routes, etc.

I like the IQue simply because it has the same features but compact and much cheaper. I could have used this few weekends ago when I was in Los Cabos, Mexico hiking and getting lost.... as usual.

just to let you all know I just posted my traffic Pro for sale in the classifieds. Its almost brand new only had it a month - it has the amber display so it matches the dash lighting - but I've decided to go with an MP3 head unit and a Garmin IQ3600. I'm going to be taking my car out of the country and the Traffic Pro doesn't have the street coverage I will need. It works great in the US though. The sound is a big improvement on the cdr 210 that it replaced. (that is also for sale). I liked the stock look of the TP. (Cleaner than the Alpine that is now installed) just wish it played MP3s.
