Default Question on preventative maintenance

Picked up a '96 coupe a few weeks ago (I've started all of my posts like that - i really should just post a pic). Anyway, had it PPI'd at Power Tech and no real problems.

I believe it's been well over a year since the PO changed the oil (he only drove about 1k-2k/year) so I'm going to have that done Monday at a local Porsche shop.

Anything else you recommend having done while I'm there? The car has 24k miles on it. Air filter? Fuel filter? Tranny fluid (there is a slight grind from 1st to 2nd)? Check belts?

Advice greatly appreciated.

BTW, I've got to say - this board is absolutely great. I previously had an E46 M3 and used to browse the Roadfly boards alot - what a difference.

I'd suggest to skip straight to the 30K service. Change all fluids (including brake fluid), filters, spark plugs, caps, rotors. Replace the belts. Then start driving that puppy. I'd do an oil change every 7500 miles max, or 12 mos, after your service.

Steve - ballpark idea what all that will run? I'm having it done at a Porsche dealer. About $1,000?

Porsche dealers will charge you an arm and a leg, for sure more than $1000... I'm also on changing oil, the belts, tranny fluid, brake fluids. Check the airfliter if it needs replacement. The rest with so few miles on your car they should be ok. Inspect the pads for wear ( very easy to do) and visually the rotors. One great DIY site is Robin's site at www.p-car.com There you can see a lot of maintenance items and get visual clues. If you are not handy ( or scared to mess up like me ) with the wrench see about going on a good independant specialist to do these stuff.
Good luck!

30K service at a dealer will run around $12-1400 AND there is the optional brake fluid flush which you should do..... As DJF1 stated, find a good independent. The whole thing should run under $1000 with the brake fluid flush.

I would cancel the dealer and find a good independent shop. The suggestion of doing the 30,000 mile service is a great idea. This way you're starting fresh. No doubt there is someone on this Rennlist board that can recommend one in the Bergen County NJ area. You might consider a new posting with that as your header. Good luck.

At a dealer? Equal to a mortgage payment on your house is my guess.

Definately do for the 30k service, at an independent.

Also with a low mileage car it's VERY important to make sure you give it some italian tuning to help blow the cobwebs out.

Many people also recommend a bottle of Techron be used right befor the service/oil change

I've heard some really good things here about PowerTech. Why not get it done there?
