Hi all,
I've searched the archives and can't come up with a solution to this problem. Here's the deal: I bought my current 993 over the winter. I live in Seattle so almost never use the a/c. I turned it on a week ago and it really smelled bad. Is there any way I can fix this problem?
I read in the archives that the way to avoid it is to run the fan without the a/c for a few minutes before turning off the car, but what do I do if it already smells? Thanks,
steve

Steve,
I've had this happen in other cars (fortunately not in the 993) and I've found no real way to get rid of it permanently because mold has found a home in your ducting somewhere. One thing you could do to treat the smell is spray one of any variety of disinfectants, deodorizers, fragrances into the intake vents (outside, at the top edge of your hood) as you run the AC. You'll get a bunch of opinions on which spray to use, and I have no real recommendation, but I've never found one that I didn't have to eventually reapply. On the bright side, it won't smell as bad. I have heard of others on the 993 say to check the pollen filter and its housing and spray there. I haven't done this, but perhaps it's worth a try. Maybe you can tell us how well that works.
Good luck.
Edward

I've had good luck in the past on another car spraying a mild disinfectant and water solution into the air intake while the fan is on high to inhale it. You also should check the drain hose under the car to make sure it is not clogged - perhaps spray a bit of compressed air into it. I believe there is a trap (like under a sink)in the line to prevent cool air from escaping, and this may be source of the clog.
Good luck.
Good luck.

When I first bought my car it was no the nose when I ran the air, maybe even just the fan too? That went away when I had the pollen filters changed. They were the originals from 95. Maybe it's that?
Good Luck Stinky. <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

My 95 C4 developed a fairly bad case of AC stink this summer; I was able to kill it by leaving the (fully warmed up) car idling for 15 minutes with the windows down and the heat cranked up full blast. The smell hasn't returned, and I never turn the AC off before shutting down..
If that doesn't work, your local auto parts store likely sells some AC mildew remover spray; you have to spray into the system right at the intake. I bought a can but didn' t have to use it.
Best,
Vic

Steve,
I live in the Seattle area and had the same AC
problem. I traced it down to the dirty
pollen filters. Try removing them and re-test
the system. The two filters are not cheap
(about $50+ each) at Bellevue Barrier.
I've been running it without the filters and this
greatly increases the airflow performance.
You can always smother the mold with
WD-40 fragrance. Yes, it's the cologne for
real men.
