96 C2 Transmission Problems

My mechanic has the transmission out. The 2nd gear synro is shot. Also some teeth were chewed up on 2nd gear. Unfortionatly 1st and 2nd are a matched pair so both have to be replaced. Good news, they are available in the US.
He said the tranny fluid was black. Looked like a diesel. He suggested changing the tranny oil at about 30,000 miles instead of the 60,000 that Porsche recommends. That would be some pretty cheep insurance.

During my very recent clutch replacement (5/01), the engine was not removed. Saved me $$, and the clutch works fine 
.
As a matter of fact, the mechanic performing the work made the point of telling me that many mechanics aren't aware that it's unnecessary to pull the engine with the transmission in order to work on the transmission.
