993 C2 Driver Journal - Midnight Blue / Chestnut Brown
Since I enjoy reading other members' adventures with their 911s, I'm starting a new thread here to share my ownership tales. I just recently acquired a nice 993 C2 in Midnight Blue with a Chestnut Brown interior -- not a combination that you see very often!
About my Porsche history: I bought my first 911 in 2017, a 2.4T Targa (1972). Once I got it fully sorted, I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to drive a 911 in the winter as well, so I added a 996 C2 for semi-daily use, which brought me lots of joy and also sorrow (IMS bearing failure). Even though the engine could be repaired, I didn't really enjoy it as much afterwards and decided to replace it with a 996 Turbo, mainly because of the bullet-proof engine. The Turbo is an awesome car, but you really can only use its potential on the Autobahn. On normal roads, there's just a few seconds of turbo rush to enjoy and then you have to back off again. It's just not that much fun to drive in the real world.
So after two years, I got the itch again and started looking for 993s. I always have loved the design, they're solid mechanically, and it's very cool that it has a direct link to the early 911. I had previously tried two of them and dismissed them for being "boring", but in retrospect I think I just didn't drive the right examples.
It wasn't easy to find a good 993 and I ended up looking and test driving four different cars. I wanted a manual, in a non-boring color, with solid maintenance history, and a driver, not a garage queen. The first one was Midnight Blue with a black interior and sport seats which looked good, but it started smoking heavily after the test drive and then was sold before I had a chance to do a PPI! There was one in Aventurine Green that I really liked but the PPI revealed that it needed absolutely everything and had a mediocre quality collision repair.
Then this one came up: it drove very well, no wind whistling on the highway (some of them do that), reasonable maintenance history, and it passed the PPI. It has 151,000 miles but you wouldn't be able to tell that from the way it looks and drives. Largely original paint and a LOT of road rash which will need to be addressed. I had my doubts about the interior color but I found I really enjoyed it. My 996 Turbo has a black interior and can be a very dark place -- this is more cheerful and friendly. The engine sounds great, it has the motorsport intake but regular exhaust so it rumbles nicely in the city but is quiet on the highway.
What it needs:
Bumper and hood, front fender respray to get rid of the road rash
New Euro front bumper (no bumperettes anymore)
Air conditioning fix
Steering rack leaks
New front tires
I've booked it in at my local shop at the end of this month -- can't wait to properly start driving it!
I'm also going to renew the suspension to get rid of the stock US ride height and old shocks. Still torn between M030 and M033.
Some more items on the list:
Clutch pedal is sticky at the top so probably needs a new clutch cylinder
Cruise control doesn't work
Aftermarket alarm needs to be removed
Oil level gauge doesn't work
Spoiler rattles when going back down
Maybe convert speedometer from MPH to KPH
I've already found lots of threads regarding these problems, so these shouldn't be that hard to fix. I think there's almost no 993 on the market that needs nothing but this is all manageable.

Nicely done. You have some work to do, but that is OK. When you're done (& you'll never really be done) it'll be your 993! Enjoy the 993 and slippery slope!
Thanks Chuck, that's exactly the idea. I went in with my eyes wide open. Great to have this forum as a resource, all of the issues I find are already well known with solutions.
Congrats on the purchase, that's a beauty... what a nice colour combination.. These cars are so well engineered and built like tanks. With the proper maintenance they'll keep going forever. Enjoy the journey!
We upgraded our C2 suspension immediately after purchasing it this year and I cannot recommend the MO33/Koni Special Actives highly enough. They transformed the car's handling but it still very enjoyable on road trips, date nights and hill approaches – lowered but not too low.
We owned a 1995 Polar / Chestnut coupe with factory rear seat delete (luggage shelf). It was a lovely car, and color combo. The Chestnut makes for a unique interior.
Congrats on your car @frederik . Enjoy for many kilometers in the best of health!

Thanks all! I'm really enjoying it so far. Amazing how utterly solid these cars feel. Even just puttering along in the city puts a smile on your face. And I've started to like the way it is very compliant and just... nice with the stock US 'SUV' suspension so I'm indeed leaning to M033. My 996 Turbo has M030 suspension and it can feel quite harsh at times.
Yesterday I completed my first DIY: replacing the bearing in the spoiler worm gear to fix the rattling spoiler issue.
The only thing I hate it is the aftermarket alarm. What a pain. But it will be gone soon. Just need to get the original immobilizer code from the local Porsche dealer.

Installed the fixed spoiler gear this morning and the rattle is gone! Thanks to Bergville's DIY. There is quite a loud hum from the motor if the engine is off, but I guess (hope) this is normal. Hopefully the glue on the housing will hold.
