1998 C2S purchase question
I've found a 1998 C2S with: 6sp, power driver's seat, 18" wheels, litronic lights. It has 35K miles on it and they are asking $54,950. Edmunds Used valuation showed car was worth between 42K and $48K. I'm really not interested in negotiating with someone that is that far off on price. So my question is whether or not Edmunds or the seller is way off?
I really prefer the 993 but for another $20K I could get a 2003 996 with a four warranty.

I think the consensus was that low $50s is a good deal for a 98 C2S in good condition with reasonable mileage. KBB and Edmunds are generally not considered reliable sources for 993 resale values.
Good luck.

Hey Ron...
Tough question to ask on this board. The clear and definitive answer when it comes to pricing these cars is, THERE IS NO CLEAR AND DEFINITIVE ANSWER..
I can tell you this though.. It sounds like a pretty good deal. I know what edmunds is telling you, been there, done that.. When I bought my car in January edmunds told me I paid too much too. Every one else thinks I stold the vehicle.
I would say to negotiate the price down a bit more if you can. There is probably some room still there. But the prices on these cars is really all over the board..
I would not suggest you add the 20K and buy a new 996 with warranty. If you have the extra 20K, go buy a 993 Turbo
But that's just my opinion... Besides, have you seen the resale value on the 996's!! YUCK!!

I just bought a '98 C2S from a gentleman in SC....a lot of variables go into fine tuning the final purchase price, but for a genuine example, the price point of $50,000, give or take $5,000, seemed to be the range....Edmunds is not relevant in my opinion due to the very small universe of '98 Porsches

Yep, my sister and I are going to own it 80%/20%....BUT it is in my garage....Under Va.law there is a right of survivorship...I get hit by a " milk truck "....she has a Porsche...she is a car nut, used to drive a XK150
Am I missing something???? Every 98 C2S that I have seen advertised with miles at 20k or less are asking low 60s to low 70s pretty much depending on the miles. I have noticed that similiar mileage 97 C2S' go for about $6-8k less.
No, you're not missing something. In general, the "asking" prices for these are higher than described above. You have to do a lot of legwork to get a lower price, as guys like B-line would probably testify.
I just bought a 97 c2s w/ 15k miles- excellent shape (i mean excellent) for $59k
white/black w/ sport seats. very nice car - i think i got a fair deal - not the best deal in town but the car was very meticulously cared for - and i think your not just buying a car but the previous service/ownership records as well!

As Kevin said,
A lot of us on the board did tons and tons of legwork to find the right car. It is worth every second.
I've heard it could take 6 months to a year to find the right car. I happened to get lucky and found one in a couple months. I worked hard to get a good price and was patient.
I would highly recommend a certification and trying to find the car from an authorized dealer if possible.
I even bought it sight unseen.
And, since there has been a ton of discussions about certain dealers lately, I guess it's only appropiate that we recommend some as well.
I bought my car from Foreign Cars Italia in Greensboro N.Carolina. They are rated #1 in customer satisfaction and I happen to agree with their reputation and ranking.
What a great dealership..

I have been looking at 95 and 96s' and in my area they are in the 45-50k range generally with below 30k miles. This asking price sounds to be in the right ballpark the best way to judge prices is look through all the classifieds and you will get a feel for what the models you want are going for.Best of luck!
I don't think that price is off at all. As a matter of fact if the car is clean I think it is a good price. In fairness though, I don't live in Charleston SC so I don't know what the market is. I also think if an extra $20,000 is no big deal to you get a 993 turbo or customer tailor your own 2003. Good luck either way. <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />
