Post "hanging" clutch pedal

Hey guys,

I have had the "hanging clutch pedal" symptom in my car for a while now (1995 coupe), and today I changed that.

The system had been bled recently, w/o any improvement... I also did the "clutch pedal area clean up & lube..." To no avail. So I ordered up the slave cylinder # 950.116.086.06 and replaced the old one.

Bingo, perfection.

While I was at it, I replaced the full hydraulic system fluid with ATE blue as well.

What is up w/ that **** poor slave? Oh well, just glad it's 100% again.

Had somewhat of a similar problem about 3 mths ago. Mine was more of the clutch hanging just slightly making changing of gears not a smooth as I would like. Unfortunately rather than a simple pedal or linkage problem it turned out to be the throw-out fork...... However, once replaced it made all the difference in the world and problably saved $$$$$$$$ on clutch replacement down the line. Steve

Thumbs up

Steve,

James @ K&M told me that you have your spoiler wall on order...

If you need any help on that I would be glad to assist.

I told James to get me one too, since mine is weak at best.

If your going to be in town picking something up from K&M, drop me a note. I might be able to stop by w/ my car & say hello. Then you could see an installed strut brace & even hear some Robin Sun mufflers! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Michael B,

Don't mean to ruin your happiness but i had the same problem with my 95. Did the clean up per Robin's diy instruction, didn't help. changed slave cylinder, problem went away for a few months but came back (eventhough a bit less but i wouldn't be surprised if it got worse). Finally changed the updated clutch lever (do a search on cluth lever). It's has been a month and the problem is not back yet. According to some of the members on here, the repair manual said changing to the new clutch lever will definitely fixes the problem. I hope this is the last fix.

Hope yours is ok for good.

Michael B.,

My friend has a 93 C2 and this hang clutch drove him nuts...

When he was at VA. he had Autothority looked at and was told to flush the fluid. The problem came back with in a week, so they flushed again and it's still there. He then went to the local dealer and was told to change the slave cylinder. After about a month the problem came back. So he went to another German car specialist and was told to clean the pedal bushings and replace the spring. Well, it was better but still has the problem.

Last month he moved here and we changed the gearbox oil and he told me that it had improved quite a bit BUT still has the hang problem. I told him to go to my mechanic and see what he has to say. So my guy told him to do the updated lever and said this IS the cure for it. He had done it for about 3 weeks now and so far so good.

So if your problem came back again, may be doing what hn said change the lever might just be the right move...

Good luck...

Well,

I tell you all what... Let me be the guinea pig, and see what happens.

I will be more than happy to replace the arm next - if the symptoms ever do arise again.

I will drop an occasional post about how it is going.

FWIW, I’ve replaced both the slave cylinder and the pedal lever. I don’t have the hanging clutch pedal anymore. I think the pedal lever is the definitive fix. As far as I know, it’s what both Porsche and Andial recommend. Replacing the slave works for most people most of the time, though, which is why it’s often recommended on this board.

Based on the cumulative data from over the years in trying to resolve this clutch pedal hanging problem I have made an addition to the p-car.com DIY section regarding clutch pedal hanging problem.

Basically now it includes the listing of possible recommendation of fixes in order based on their repair cost.

(1). Try to lubricate the clutch pedal mechanism
(2). Flush the clutch slave cylinder
(3). Replace the clutch slave cylinder
(4). Perform the clutch pedal kinematics technical bulletin update.

For what it's worth, I had the hanging clutch problem. Replaced the pedal lever per the technical bulletin. Clutch has been perfect for last 7-8 mos (can't remember exactly when I had it done). The pedal lever was clearly the problem -- you could see where a small piece broke off and was causing all of the problems. I probably would follow Robin's advice in the opposite order at least with respect to items 3 and 4. Of course Robin's the real expert, but my mechanic told me that the slave cylinder is the same one they used in the 964s and never had problems like we have in the 993's. He seemed convinced that the slave cylinder is rarely the problem. A new one just masks the problem for a while. Anyhow, just my $.02.

Actually, the 964 does have the same problem.

HN, tom_993 and Griffin:

Robin (Mr. P-Car) and I changed my pedal lever this afternoon and my problem is gone too. It is too early to tell if it is fixed permanently, but the pedal definitely feels different. I was wondering if you guys noticed a marked difference in the way the pedal/clutch feels after the change. Mine feels a little stiffer (the pedal that is).

Hank,

I was gonna email you to let you know the result but i thought it was too early (only been a month with weekends drive). Anyway, i try not to let it affect me psychologicaly but i have to admit it does feel different, smoother. When i changed the slave cylinder i did feel some difference too but not like this.

Edited 6/03: The problem came back. Changed to updated lever. The problem is gone permanently

Does anybody know if the clutch pedal kinematics technical bulletin update also applies to the 964 or is it just for the 993? Also does anyone have a link to or copy of the bulletin that I can read.

I have done items 1 & 2 without success so now have a new slave cylinder on order as that seems to be where the graunching noise is coming from. Also the fluid in the slave cylinder gets discoloured (blackish) quite quickly.
