Pete,

When we performed the clutch pedal upgrade this weekend (Hank did all the work), I took pictures of the process. I should be able to complete the DIY article soon, will keep everyone posted.

Robin (Mr. P-Car) and I changed my pedal lever this afternoon and my problem is gone too. It is too early to tell if it is fixed permanently, but the pedal definitely feels different. I was wondering if you guys noticed a marked difference in the way the pedal/clutch feels after the change. Mine feels a little stiffer (the pedal that is).

Hank,
It’s been so long I hardly remember. I had replaced the slave, but still had an inch or so of “free play” at the top of the pedal. I was trying to get rid of this by updating the lever. The top inch is still soft, but it’s better. I don’t recall a major increase in stiffness.

Tom:

I have had the opportunity to drive it more today. Like you, but on a different 993, I replaced the slave cylinder and still had the hanging problem. My pedal would actually not fully return before I replaced the lever. In fact, I have developed a habit of pushing the clutch toward me with the top of my shoes after using the clutch. Now, however, it always returns to the proper starting position, but, and again like you said, it is a little soft for the first inch of movement, then it feels normal. I have several friends with 993s around, so I am going to try one or two of their clutch pedals for a comparison.

Thanks for the feedback,

Hank

Was the "updated" clutch lever updated during any production year of 993s? Or, is it a fix that has been developed since 993 production ceased?

Does anyone happen to have the part number on the "updated" lever? Thanks.

They have several part numbers. Here's the one they ordered for mine 993-423-519-03.

Richard:

The lever was updated during the production run of the 993s. The earliest lever number is 993.423.519.00. That was the worst one. The newest and presumably the best one is 993.423.519.03. That is the one that I installed this weekend.

Here is the thing that I don’t understand. My clutch pedal and therefore lever must have worked normally at one time. Assuming that is true, then what has changed that requires me to change levers in order to get back to a normally operating clutch pedal?

Verry good question Hank.I asked my dealership about the updated lever and they told me it was introduced and installed in the '97 993's.However my 993 is a '97 model and i have this hanging for the last inch or so.What does this tell us? My dealership insists that i have this updated lever so i guess i am going for the slave and master cylinders.

I would like to see pictures of the painted bumperettes when you get them on if it isn’t too much trouble. I removed and filled the rectangular holes on a previous 993’s bumper. It looked very similar to a Euro rear bumper when finished. This wouldn’t work if you are planning to pull a utility trailer. By the way, there is a guy here in Atlanta who pulls one of those trailers to the track with his RUF Boxster. I was paddocked next to him last March and the trailer is a very convenient option.

Nick:

The hydraulic clutch system is a very simple system and it does make you wonder what is wearing. I am looking at the lever that I replaced and noticed that it has some dried grease on it and evidence of mechanical binding at one of the connection points. My clutch is new which only leaves the master and slave cylinders plus the linkages associated with the pedal console as possible culprits. Should you decide to check or change your lever, it is actually a very easy job with the worst part being the bleeding of the slave cylinder. As a side note, some pretty foul brake fluid came out in the bleeding process.

OK, the clutch pedal kinematic lever update DIY is now finished.

You can find the link here.

Hank and hn,

Thanks for your responses and , thank you Robin for the DIY. My car is a '98 (22,000 miles) and I have experienced some "clicking" when depressing the clutch (engine off) and when letting it out. kind of sounds like a cable binding on something! The pedal does not hang up at all.

Richard,

What you have described sounds like it is the known clutch slave cylinder problem. While you are hearing the clicking sound do you also feel the clicks through the clutch pedal?

If you do feel the clicks through your clutch pedal than replacing your clutch slave cylinder will solve that problem.

Don't have a DIY on how to replace the clutch slave cylinder, since it is a "blind" replacement part, I can't get a camera to it.

Thumbs up

Awesome DIY Robin and Hank. Very clear, professional, helpful and intimidating. I now have no illusions about tackling that task on my own.
Thanks. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Robin,

I checked last night and do feel the clicks as I push the clutch in and let it out. I also figured it is the slave cylinder. It is a little better since I had the slave flushed approx 2,000 miles ago. Didn't expect the flush to cure the clicks, but wanted new, clean fluid in there. The old fluid was really ugly-dirty.

Thanks,
Richard
